skipz where are you based yourself? if you have trouble try the site deeperblue.com and then going on to the ireland spearing thread you will need to register etc but its another place where most irish spearos hang out and there are a lot more than you think.

How shall I find how much weight do I need? Going from fresh water in a swimming pool into the sea (in a wetsuit) made huge difference to my natural negative buoyancy
By the way, I always loved the sea, but seeing what is down there freaked me quite a few times today. But I'll get down again. Soon! :D

Thonda its real down to trial and error. Get a rubber belt if you can and add weight at a pier or with a boat beside you etc. depending on the depth your diving to you want to be positive form 10m up. Spearfishermen use a lot more to be heavier in shallower water and it also depends on what kind of place your diving in. In kelp you can grab a stalk and hold yourself down easily enough. Place the weights evenly around your belt but mostly on the side and or back so that it pulls you into an upright position on the surface.
Do a course if you can or really want to get into it here. I am involved in the courses.

Oh no, I don't want to go so deep. We will see what will happen in the future, but the course is not possible so far. Just keeping it safe within my comfort zone. Thanks for the reply.

No hassle Thonda just be comfortable and use less weight if you can.

Anyone looking to start but has no money a 1/4 inch stainless steel bar about five foot long does the job. Just sharpen one end and watch out for rocks.

I am going to go down with my boss next time. He is diver and has weights. And of course, more experience.

    Hi guys,

I am delighted to see that other people are looking into spearfishing in Ireland. I live in Ireland for 4 years now (an other Greek) and I really miss it, even though I was never really good at it, I used to really enjoy the whole procedure of trying to get my own dinner.
I haven’t looked at it properly so far and the reason is that I am not familiar with the irish sea and especially with the tide, so I wouldn’t go out there on my own without somebody with a bit more experience in the area.
Anyway there might be some legal technicalities as The Irish Dave said, but “where is a will there is a way” so if even if it is not possible to get a speargun, you could still get out there and try to get some scallops or razor clams or even a lobster with a bit of luck. So if you go ahead with the idea of the club after all, I would love to join you.
I came across your message when I started looking into spear fishing...my boyfriend is Greek and a spear fishing fanatic and I would be interested in hearing if you have done anything about this as he will be here in Ireland (Dublin) for a few months from November...

Hi there ! I'm looking for a dive buddy to do freediving spearfishing with. Used to do that for years back home in my country. Only started to do this again in Ireland this year. I'm living in Dublin and going diving all around Dublin cost. Kind of tired doing it on my own. So if anyone in Dublin is doing it please write me an email to dabrisius@yahoo.com

Spearguns require a license, the same as any Firearm. Rubber or Pneumatic there is no difference.
Unliceensed firearm ownership is treated very seriously.

I'd also be very interested in finding out how to license a rubber banded spear-gun. Or having written confirmation that it's not required.

Two resources that I've found seem to imply it is required:
    From department of Justice (http://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/Firearms_and_Ammunition_FAQ)
    - What's the position with crossbows, spearguns, paintball markers and airguns such as air rifles?
Crossbows, spearguns and all airguns with a muzzle velocity of over one joule (including paintball markers) are legally considered firearms and have to be licensed. You should apply for a firearms certificate in the normal way.
    and
This article in particular is very worrying:
