No, you won't be able to overclock it. Its an off the shelf, oem machine, and affords no opportunity for overclocking.

You dont need to overclock a pc with that sorta spec aswell.

Speaking of Dell machines I have a stupid question.

What is the difference of a 4500 series Dell and a 8200 series Dell?

I ask as Im about to buy a new Dell pc and the pricing of the custom built ones seems weird.A 8200 pc seems to cost more than a 4500 pc with much better specs!

Is the sticker with the model number all that's different on a custome built Dell pc? Or is there some major difference in the M/B's?

Specs Im going for P4 2.53
    512mb rambus
    80 gb 7200 hd

Now with just the basic extra's the 8200 version is about €700 more expensive yet the only difference I can see is the sticker on the front!

Any help would be great :)

Well basically the 8200 comes with rambus rdram instead, and a much much nicer, more expandable case. The 4500 doesn't come with rambus, full stop. It comes with ddr pc2100 ram, a bit slower. That shouldn't account for 700 euro difference though, are you sure you are comparing apples with apples here? Looking at the configure and buy page for the 8200, it seems that going from a 2.26 to a 2.53 ghz p4 costs you 500 euro. Don't do it. That is a complete rip off, the 2.53 part will be costing around 300 euro shortly, apart from anything else theres only about a 5% real world improvement over the 2.26. You can upgrade the cpu later if necessary.

I thought the 4500 and the 8200 used the same case. They look the same anywhere I've seen them. The Dell site doesn't make sense. The prices change on a daily price and for one model adding an extra component could be +100 and to do the same on the next model could be +400 for no apparent reason.

For this reason you have to decide a spec then go through a few models and configure them the same and see what prices you come out with. For example I'd configured a machine with

    21" Trinitron Monitor,
    P4 2.26
    512mb ram,
    80gb 7200 drive
    GF4ti4200
    Turtle beach sound card
    network card
    modem card
    DVD/CDRW drive
    395 speakers
    XP pro

The price varied as much as + or - 400 depending which model I configured. In the end the Rambus 8200 model was cheaper by €300 than the 4500 model. Absolutely nuts. I've also noticed that adding options to the cheaper models, particularly the ones on special offers is much more expensive than the other models. The way the shopping cart is configured it brings you these models first. The unwary shooper will get a poorer deal than those willing and knowledgeable enough to spend a bit of time checking out the prices of the same config on different models.

Also as the prices change so much its hard to check this out as they will have changed them all around tomorrow again.

I'm sure this method of sales makes more money for Dell but its little too hard nosed IMO.

And I concur with the last poster. Don't buy the latest or the fastest of anything. Always buy on the middle of the range. Thats where the best value is.

You are spot on about how messy the Dell.ie site can get.

Last week I had a dream system config ready to go for under €2500 and this week its not only gone but the nearest alternative has 256mb less but has 80GB more HD space and the lowest chip is a P4 2.4!

The next "offer" ends on Wednesday so I'll check them out then :)

The config Im looking for is around this.....
    19" Trinitron Monitor,
    P4 2.4 - no choice now
512mb ram - rambus stuff but will settle for 256mb
    80gb 7200 drive
    GF4ti4200
SB Live 1024 - more than enough considering my sound setup
modem card - isdn card if possable
    DVD/CDRW drive
Basic speakers sound not an issue
    XP

I have that Dell trinitron 19" (P993 I think) at work and its a beaut. Why don't drop the live if sound isn't an issue. I'm using the onboard sound on the Dell at work and its good enough to listen to my Mp3's and CD's. I'd need better speakers to appreciate the benefits of a better sound card, and probably better quality mp3's too.

Just an update on my fúcked up journey through the Dell online sales web site. Im talking totaly mental here.

This 8200 based system is gonna set me back €2500.

    P4 2.4 -
19" Monitor - big, black and basic but will do the job
512MB Rambus - wow its nano seconds faster now
120GB 7200 RPM HD - super extra porn hoarding capabilities
    GF4 TI 4600 128MB GFX Card - Quake 7 Im ready for ya :)
SB Live 1024 - with digital earphones these own
56k modem - for sale 5 minites after I get this puppy
DVD/CDRW drive - a DVD and CD rewriter - mass movable porn :)
Basic speakers - better be colour coded to match rest of PC
XP - paying for windows just hurts
+ usual bog standard stuff that comes with all Dell PC's

Now the funny thing is if I try and configure the lower spec 8200 PC's, even with only 256MB Rambus memory and 80GB Hard Drive, it cost's me €150 more!

    Like WTF?

Ahh well i guess this is just Dell's way of telling me I need to hoard more porn on my PC :)
