The Irish Times reports that Ireland's two most important regulators have told the European Commission that proposed Europe-wide regulatory reforms will damage the telecommunications industry here. The Director of Telecommunications Regulation and the Competition Authority have warned that liberalisation of the telecoms market could be derailed if the Commission goes ahead with plans to restrict the power of national communications regulators. The regulators told the Commission that its proposed directives on the communications market could cause substantial delays in addressing anti-competitive behaviour.
I don't know anything about the legislation, so this is probably misplaced, but it has to be said: Yeah guys, you're doing so well as it is.

    Also from ENN, same page:
The same paper says that Esat BT's plan to roll out DSL, or high-speed Internet, lines is being delayed by a number of local authorities that are proposing hefty fees to dig up the streets. The delays, which are being accentuated by long lead times set by authorities before digging can begin, could threaten Esat BT's ability to avail of government funding worth EUR10 million. The terms of the funding stipulate that Esat BT must complete its EUR40 million DSL rollout by next year.
Oh wot a clever gumment we got.

Maybe they will soon issue another joint statement - this time explaining why they can't force decent competion in internet connectivity in Ireland and asking the Minister to explain what he thinks the term "affordable internet access" in the 2002 Communications Act actiually means so that they can get on with their jobs.
