So from all the posts i have read.

Flat fee of €30/m for 150 hours.

All calls bar mobiles go through UTV. @ a 25% discount.

This will mean savings for everyone.

    Cant wait to sign up.

Martin, is there any chance you can give us a ball park figure of the number of online signups? :)
    Maybe tommorrow????

    Regards,

    Paul

Does that mean right now, if I subscribe and request it, for 60 Euro a month I will get 150 hours at 128 kbps ISDN?
Without being held to anything here (as this is not a standard service we're offering under UTVip and there may be technical reasons beyond what I've thought through......) we could offer you 150 hours at 128kbps ISDN.
Also, is there a "set-up fee" for ISDN calls during the day the same as analog calls?
    For non-UTVip internet calls? Yes.

    Hey Martin

Well done for spending time here and posting replies to the questions. Imagine EirCoy doing that!

Great work - keep it up.

if you could follow this by bringing out an ADSL package for 40-50 euro per month I would change my will to leave UTVIP all my property, you could probably have my firstborn as well

class, its about time we got a proper product too
    I'll sign up asap.

    Hi Martin,

Good work on getting the product out.

    Quick question:

I'm moving house soon (~3 weeks) if I sign up now can I switch the service to my new house when I move? Whats your policy on this?

apologies if the question has been asked/answered already but here it is anyway...

considering the service for 150 hours a month - if all these 150 hours are not used up within the month - will the remaining hours carry over to the next month?

  • Registered Users Posts: 649 ✭✭✭Spoonman

Nice to finally see someone releasing a product with resonable hours usage & on isdn.

Martin, about subscribing twice for 150 hours at 128k, is it also possible that one could subscribe twice on the one line and get the hours running concurrently.
ie. €30x2=300hours per month which should be enough for anyones need on dialup. I find 150 hours a bit short a limit for my needs but 300 hours would do nicely.

Do some of you people not leave your houses ? I dont know about you but 5 hours a day is loads.

When i get home from work i dont logon till bed time .... just a suggestion, dont flame me, but get out a bit more.

UTV ... you beautiful, beautiful babies!!! :D

Just gotta convince the olds ... they're a little wary abou the call setup fee and how much of a saving they'll really get on voice calls.

Ah .... I get to keep my @dna.ie address after all.

    you beautiful, beautiful babies!!! :D

Eircom ... one less person (& their family too) you'll be getting extortion money out of. CAN YOU FEEL IT ... UMM .. yeahhhhhh .. take it Eircom.

This is not in the spirit that the service is meant - the 150 hour limit is not a rigid limit. For instance someone using the service for 175 hours with a fair % of peak usage will not see their account terminated. This is not a tiered service, and as such the 150 hour limit is a guide which will enable us to ensure that the service is not abused by a few to the detriment of many. Hope this doesn't sound harsh, or like I'm evading the question.....but by being open about a figure we hope customers will understand how the service works.

So there is no "carry over" from a previous month.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,660 ✭✭✭crawler

Had a look at the voice rates for UTVip - they look high compared to Esat , except on a couple of areas.......lets not get carried away though, what is more important - voice charges or data charges...people will choose and they ARE better that Eircom at first glance. They have to make margin somewhere and we do want them around in 6 months time! :)

I still think it's an excellent deal and I'm signing up - Bye bye Eircom ( god , that feels good!!)

Say i start September 16, decide to stop. So in November I send the letter. They receive 16 November. Sounds like the last day of the 3rd month following receipt would be 28th of Feb???
    Our mistake - corrected.
but a bit confused on the ould sums -"UTVip will support usage of up to 150 hours off-peak use monthly. That’s around 5 hours per day, 5 days per week"
Another typo - should be 7 days per week :)

    2 questions:

1: When I sign up do i keep the phone number i have or do i have to get a new one from UTV?

2: Is the connection rate similar to that ofr your free dial up?

I will most likely sign up for this service cause it'll save me about 80 euros a month :)

I'm sure many others, like me, have to share their home PC & internet with the rest of the family. There are 6 of us in my house using the internet. I would say we would use at least 5 hrs offpeak / weekday, and possibly 10+ hrs offpeak / weekendday. Hence my earlier questions about the 150hr limit + email warnings.

5 hrs a day is plenty for ONE user, sure. Just a suggestions, dont flame me, but think a little.

    Continue with your current number.
2: Is the connection rate similar to that ofr your free dial up?
Not sure what you mean here......you are terminating on the same hardware and using the same bandwidth as the current dialup - your connection rate should be identical......but your call charges should go down :)
I'm moving house soon (~3 weeks) if I sign up now can I switch the service to my new house when I move? Whats your policy on this?
Not 100% sure on this (give us a call in a day or so), but I'd expect we'd charge you an admin fee (approx €10....?) to deprovision and reprovision your CPS (as Eircom charge us...). May not be so if you migrate your number etc.

    Here's an anomaly....

    Local
    Evening Eircom 1.26
    Evening UTVip 0.95
    Weekend Eircom 1.26
    Weekend UTVip 0.95

Eircoms best offpeak price is with the circle of friends 10% discount to their geographic POPS for the pay as you go service

    Thats 1.26 -(1.26*0.1) = 1.134c

After you have used up the 150 hours you are better off ringing the Eircom POP at Local/Weekend UTV rates for 0.95 instead of what Eircom would charge themselves at 1.134 with circle of friends.

In fact ya get that cheaper rate EVEN without signing up to the UTV restricted use Monthly plan ....... as the FAQ sez.

I've one question as a follow up to the connection one, do you have any plans to upgrade your network (now that half of the country is going to move over :)) so that I don't get traceroutes like this:

    Hi Martin

Is it possable to pay extra to get more hours (I know spoony asked, but it wasnt answered) like €58 per month for 250-300 hours?

Also what will the connection speed be like, as the old Esat no limits sucked speed wise. Will I still be connected at 64k on my isdn line with your service?

I see 104ms for Eircom.....and 35ms for Via - these are both pretty healthy and I can't see a problem. Is it the number of hops? If so, then this is immaterial to your access speeds/pings etc for games et al.

indeed. No INEX or even LINX connection it seems.

AND it looked like Nevada Telecoms fault too, ask them what they are up to.

At least UUNET peer with Nevada in England and not in the US

I'll certainly be signing up just as soon as I get home. I'd like to add my voice to those suggesting that some kind of automated notification for users who are approaching excessive usage, but otherwise, the service looks great.

The responses are fine just now, wait until the american brats get home from skool and clog up the californian ip highways. Thats when the transatlantic hops become a problem. Try the same tracert at 11.00pm IST.

I think maybe he's concerned about being router through the UK/New York, instead of going through INEX.

NevadaTele definitely do have INEX peering though:

I really don't think you'll find bandwidth or access speeds a problem, and we certainly have the capacity and peers. Feel free to sign up for a free dialup tonight and give it a go before coming across http://www.u.tv/internet/services

Nevada currently peer at LINX and at INEX. Not sure about the INEX peer cause the last I heard everyone was capped at 2meg and it was being "downed" for some repair/upgrade work.

    I see:
    108 to mail.dna.ie from Eircom
    8 to ns.iol.ie from Eircom

    38 to mail.dna.ie from Via
    11 to ns.iol.ie from Via

It does actually effect your ping for games, the more hops the higher the ping. Also the more hops the more likely you are to come across a bury link which will make it worse.

As for browsing the web, your right, it only makes a tiny difference. What I meant was, are you planning to connect to the INEX.
