that wont happen until at least may next year. after about 230 odd days windows update will start to connect to windows update v5(current is v4) servers. this new system will have the ability to check your cd key. for those who have legal versions of xp ;) this will be no problem but for those using the no activation corp editions with generated keys you will have a problem.

when the bluelist keygen came out in feb. microsoft changed the wpa servers to check the list of valid keys that microsoft had shipped to retailers etc against the one you were trying to use to activate xp.when it found that your key was not on the list it refused to activate it. this stopped those using the generated home and pro keys dead in their tracks. it didnt however stop the corp users. the new system will, as far as i know not have the ability to lock you out of your operating system(only time will tell though) but simply not allow you to use windows update. as for cracking it i doubt we will see somthing that dosent alter some system files in some way. since its a sever side authentication system it will be very hard to crack from the user end and hacking mircosofts servers to allow the use of generated keys will not go unnoticed might get you in a bit of trouble. :)

who cares anyway you will still be able to download the updates yourself.

It'l only be a matter of time before cracks come out to avoid the service pack's security. THere's already a patch you can run after sp3 has been installed on win2k that avoids sending info to microsoft

That's not what the article says. It says it will check the product key against two known pirated keys. There's a major difference between that and full verification.

I'd say that could still catch a lot of people. The same keys seem to keep coming up again and again. Personally I know five people using one key for MS Office, and I'm sure they're not the only ones..

Do a search for DT3FT in Google and see how many pages come up

Since the release of Windows XP Professional, Microsoft has discovered that the vast majority of illegitimate copies in use are using a small handful of leaked "corporate" keys. In an effort to thwart these illegitimate users, Windows XP Service Pack 1 (and possibly all future updates) will not install on systems using these keys, and it is unclear what additional steps Microsoft may take in the future. Microsoft claims that legitimate licensed users of XP Professional should be unaffected, however there are a number of different ways one of these leaked keys can find its way into an otherwise legal environment and cause serious deployment issues. (When a legitimate corporate key is not at hand during an installation process, it's a common practice for some administrators to simple search the web for a valid key.) Here's how to check if your systems are using a leaked key, and how to change the product activation key if they are...

Found on a web site while looking for ways to fins out my XP CD code.

I can attach the page if you want it...it lists all the keys that have been leaked onto the net and wont work with SP1

There is a way to find out keys off of a legit xp os. just search for a file caled "oobeinfo" and scroll down to the bottom of this txt file. this works on oem and most home versions.

    http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/showflat.php?Board=software&Number=2707

this is a board all about xp and stuff, very intresting

also type "oobe/msoobe /a" in the run command to see if windows XP has been activated, if it sounds like its about to do something (eggtimer appears) then nothing happens, it has been cracked .

it definitely is working in this version, i can verify because I was fixing a laptop for someone this week (dunno where they got it from) and after installing sp1 a message came up "not a legitimate license..." and then the network card refused to work anymore. lol.

bastard customers knew nothing (yeh right)

surprise surprise, i turned over the laptop and the service code was rubbed off.

Well over the weekend a friend of mine told me that he tried to download SP1 but was told he had an illegal product key! He was pissed, but he found a solution!

If you type in "SP1 crack" in KaZaA, you can find file which a very well documented explanation of how to get past this, by using a serail generator. I could't get over how easy this was. Microfost probably spent millions on this sysytem, and they guy who developed the crack boasts that he got around it on 2 hours! Using this file anyone can do it in a few minutes!

Back to the drawing board? I doubt it, I think MS are happy enough that they have got rid of the majority of pirate version, but I don't think they will ever really solve the porblem completely...

I sometimes wonder why they bother!

If you have a corporate copy of xp(pro) and you have the serial, will sp1 spot this or does it just look for cracked copys?
    thanks

If you have a corporate copy of xp(pro) and you have the serial, will sp1 spot this or does it just look for cracked copys?

There are just a few common serials floating around the net which most cracked versions hvae used. If you try to install SP1, and you have used one of these, it will tell you that you have a suspicious key, and that "you should contact your system administrator, or Microsoft Piracy Division"

but you can get around it.

Now, see that's just the kind of comment that results in

    warezmonkey.jpg

Than there's the banning and the crying, the tearing of skin from the body and it's all downhill from there

lol, i was gonna do something to that effect, didn't want to cause no trouble tho
how big is the sp-1 download? and if its over 5mb is it worth a d/l over 56k? (ugh)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

Oh, it's big. Full download is about 130 megs.

If you use the "install what you need right now" option it'll still be over 50.

It'll take you a while on 56k so I'd wait for it to be on some mag cover disc

Or just do what I did - order it for free from Microsoft (click on the "Order the Windows SP-1 CD button). 28 days and you'll be a happy bunny.

No links to cracks, no explanations of how to crack and no posting cracking s/w or spankings will follow (and NOT the good kind).

    DeV.

Face it really think MS have the time to come over to Ireland and work on arresting people..?

MS Said "The WPA is only there to reduce priacy not stop it" They only planned in slowing people down, they don't give a damn as long as they get $$$ , which they are too and loads of it! they don't give a damn about the crackers. They just scare you :P
