    Hi,
I'm considering running a wireless connection from a desktop pc in my house to an existing LAN in my office which is 200 metres away. The only obstacle between to two is a single continuous line of trees halfway between the two.

My questions are :: is this possible? what do I need? what sort of bandwidth is possible?

because this is for personal use I am not looking to spend a fortune. The purpose of the connection would be to share the proxy server on the existing LAN and its ISDN router. Also use of shared drives would be handy.

it's quite hard to tell you exactly what you'll need without seeing the layout myself, but thats not very far to have to send a wireless connection.

it's not impossible that you'd get a 1mbps connection from your house with just a wireless card. Depends on where the AP is in the office, the type of walls, and how bad those trees are. It's not that likely tho. But what you can do are...

    a) get a cheap directional antenna, the 9.3dbi panel one from www.fab-corp.com for example. That's very small and discrete and you can stick it on the side of your house pointing towards the office. That should be enough to get through some trees/the walls.

    b) or place the directional on your office building pointing at your house instead.

    c) stick the directional on a pole on your roof to get above the trees, or on the roof of your office. (you prob won't need to go to this length, it's only 200 metres)

then for your house either buy a cheap access point which can accept an external antenna. Or put a lucent/orinoco or dlink-dwl-520 in your pc and attach the antenna to that. (somewhat more awkward than the AP in a corner option)

You only need an external antenna at one end of the link, and you may not even need that.

I've the feeling i've made this sound more complex than it is. For such a short distance it should be pretty simple,

PS oh yeah, you should get an 11mb/s connection doing this. Then you just have to ensure you arent broadcasting any sensitive data. Don't trust WEP.
