Wigan's finest delivered Urban Hymns to us in 1997. Having broken up in 1995 following the tour to Support that year's "A Northern Soul" album, few would've thought that The Verve would return a mere two years later with one of the defining albums of the 1990's. Originally conceived as a Richard Ashcroft solo album, the frontman found he couldn't escape the shadow of his old band and enlisted drummer Pete Salisbury and bassist Simon Jones to help him work on new tracks. With the return of guitarist Nick McCabe at Ashcroft's request, it soon became clear that a new Verve album was on the cards. You can hear all about the album's genesis, recording and subsequent release on The Album Archive. Urban Hymns boasted 4 smash hit singles in Bittersweet Symphony, The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man and Sonnet. Hear studio versions, live versions, demo versions and b-sides associated with Urban Hymns, this Thursday at 8pm on Phantom. Sure where else would you get it?

    Regards

    Rob
