is there noise on the line?
Is there a DACS box on your line which splits it.
Is your modem set up properly? drivers?

What modem are you using etc.
    More info is needed.

Where abouts are you in Ireland

How far are you away from your local exchange

How many items do you have plugged into your line
    ie Fax Phone Modem

    What make is the modem.

I would say that you are on a carrier line in which case you
are b#ll#xed you wont be able to get Hi speed or DSL when the time comes.

type of modem? - it says MDP3858-WE

noise on the line? - no

Is there a DACS box on your line which splits it? - i don't understand

Is your modem set up properly? drivers? - it hasn't been touched since day one

Where abouts are you in Ireland - outside Dungarvan, Co. Waterford

How far are you away from your local exchange - 3 or 4 miles i think

How many items do you have plugged into your line
ie Fax Phone Modem - only the modem when i'm using it

i hope this clears it some bit because it really is pissing me off

Also might be worth checking what your port speed settings are, to do this goto control panel > modems >click on icon>highlight modem in question>goto its properties and check that the maximum port speed is set to something like 115200
