Is it possible to transfer vcr, dvd etc. to my hard drive through the usb port? If so what hardware / software will I need? Thanks for any advice.

yep its possible alright.. you'd need a convertor though something along the lines of this:

http://www.ati.com/products/pc/tvwonderusb/

quality will be limited to usb speeds.. (off hand ~2mb/sec)
don't know if pal versions retail though.
