Look smurf, I wasnt going for any personal insult here. I just felt your reasons were wrong. An "opinion".
And Im not going to be drawn into any sort of "petty" insults on the boards. I apologise for calling part of your statement stupid. That doesnt mean I think its right. Its still my opinion that the whole affair was gone about completely incorrectly. I actually wouldnt begrudge them a reasonable payrise if they went about it the right was, but like I said, the deserving of the money became less important to me when they wen completely out of line with this strike.

P.S. Always trying to be smart and cheeky? In future Ill be sarcastic and cynical so Thats so much more likeable and condescending smile.gif <
    note cheekiness and smartness

look on the bright side, this bus strike has given us new experiences:

its the best exercise I've had in years.

you have traffic jams, but has anyone ever seen a bicycle jam?. Well I did, this morning, Dublin is turning into Shanghai.

Just because other sectors of the workforce might strike out and look for pay increases, does not mean that bus drivers shouldn't strike. It is their right to strike and if anyone here reads the newspaper they will see that opinions favour more money for them. It is not their problem who else wants more money. I still say fair play to them and i reckon that they should wait untill they get enough money. It is my opinion so if you dont like it, relax and show me why they don't deserve it!

You want more proof than the fact that they've CRIPPLED the city, 20% is completely ridiculous, especial since they will not change their working pratices. And if they did get 20%, then the other bus drivers in Cork, Limerick and Galway will want a pay rise as well, so they will go on strike. And since Train drivers have a related union (or is it the same?) they'll want a pay rise as well and go on strike. The government should do two things: wait the b@stards out and introduce competion.
I do agree that they have a right to a pay rise, but in the region of 5-10% and they do have a right to strike, but they should at least provide a skeleton service at rush hour.
I'm considering taking holidays if there is an all out strike as it is just too much hassle getting in and out of Dublin with out the buses running.

You're right draco. The striking union represents train and bus drivers

It is so lonely here in my indecipherable tower of speech impedimency

Apparently only 70% of the drivers are back in work today. The other 30% have presumably decided that this whole sitting on their ar$es at home action appeals to them.

Whats the betting that we see more wildcat action over the weekend as bus drivers use this as an excuse not to bother their t1ts going into work?

Public opinion is very much against them. This isn't like the nurses strike, when opinions were divided. I've met a lot of people who are very angry about this, and are perfectly prepared to go through the hassle of having no public transport for as long as it takes, gritting their teeth and bearing it until the drivers back down and start to talk reasonably. 20% is completely unrealistic and unreasonable; their pay at the moment is easily high enough anyway, not to mention the fact that if they will make no concessions in the areas of training and productivity plans for the company, they should be fired, not given payrises.

BTW, Hobbes, 22k is more than a lot of well-qualified computer professionals earn. Seeing people look for 20% more than that (a wage hike which theoretically brings them to over 26k) for driving buses, being rude to passengers and providing a sloppy service, is just a bit too much to stomach.

    Ja,
    Rob

draco, 20% is too high but they have to ask for about that if they can be sure of 5-10%.

It is still not their problem who goes on strike, it is no reason for them not to.

    o.k.!

Hold up lads, the right to strike is part of working in a democracy, would you prefer a communist collective where strikes are illegal/punishable by prison etc??

Yes they are inconveniencing a lot of people, however consider this: they seek a 20% pay increase for a $hite job with crap hours, pretty crap pay, constant risk of verbal and/or physical assault.

TD's on the other hand, are currently paid twice as much as bus drivers, with none of the above-mentioned disadvantages to the job. I find it more than a tad hypcritical of the government to say that they cannot give the drivers a 20% increase on 20,000 a year when they are about to vote themselves a 30% increase on 35.000 a year.

On the other hand I say that however bad our government is, its better than having bus drivers running the country.

That's what I call an entirely debatable point smile.gif

    Prehaps so.

However if your only getting 22K or less for being an expert IT professional (qualified != expert or even knowledgable) then your in the wrong job/country.

Btw do all of them earn 22K? Or is that the upper bracket limit? How many hours do they work? What is the job benifits? (eg. Medical, shares, whatever).
