The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr. Dermot Ahern TD, announced today there had been a very large response to proposals for the development in Ireland of new wireless Broadband internet technology.

The Minister revealed that over 29 submissions had been received for trials of WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), underlining the interest in the pilot technology for the provision of broadband access.

The applications will now be assessed and following that process the Minister will announce the successful applicants.

The Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources is funding the trials with monies available for the promotion of broadband development. The project period is 12 months.

Well I hope the Dept brings about more funds like this. It shows there's serious interest in alternative means of bringing broadband access to urban and rural locations.

Well done if this becomes a success.

Have to say I have mixed feelings on this one:

Yes, Wireless Broadband is necessary, Yes, someone has to push the boat out, Yes, someone has to kickstart the development, Yes, its good to see money being chanelled, Yes its good to see something happening.

    BUT

Look whos at it, the good old Dept of Posts and Telegraphs (aka Communications). The same messers who:
    - supervise/regulate/whatever the ODTR, Eircom, etc
    - spent the last five years "developing" broadband
    - have moved on to this project while leaving DSL in a shambles
    - have no proven ability to deliver anything that works
    - seem to be treating wireless broadband like a new toy

    Question?

In 5 years will we have:
    - a wireless broadband network that isn't used
    - a wireless broadband network that is in the hands of someone who can prevent its use
    - proposals in the department of the taoiseach to create a second wireless broadband network using the county councils and other ad hoc arrangements
    - a 79 page ODTR consultation report prepared by OVUM showing that there is probably a need for wireless broadband , but we are not quite sure yet
    - graphs available from various sources showing that our wireless broadband capacity is ahead of our peer group (Nepal, San Marino and Nieu and Northern Mariana Islands)

    back to work...........

Very much depends on which of the 29 applications will be getting funding. Naturally, giving funding to any of the current FWA license holders would be crazy.

CorkWAN (community group) was one of the groups that applied for funding.

As I recall, broadband access is cheaper in northern Mariana than here.
