win2k read only... sometimes.

    OK. the setup is this:

    Win98 Host machine.
    2 x win2k clients.

    Now, for some reason office2k on the 2k machines opens word documents as read only.
    BUT:
    Only when the document is resident on the win98 host

    AND:
    If you exit the document/sheet etc and go back into it it is no longer read only.

    It is definitely not a question of two people reading at same time and it doesn't always happen and not always to the same files.

    any ideas?

    the sharing rights seem ok but if you think it could be that please suggest in case I have overlooked something. :)
