Teh Price o' teh Drink....

I live in Waterford. Like Cloud - I'm not against the Euro. I think its a great idea - but what annoys me is price hiking for no reason.

Last year (around xmas) the price of a pint of beer in a niteclub I frequented was about £3.00 on a saturday nite. This was expensive.

With the introduction of the Euro the price on the same pint currently stands at around €4.50 ( about £3.55).

In the pubs (most of them) the price of a pint is anything from €3.75 - €3.85 before midnite. This works out at around the £3.00 mark which would have been deemed scandalous and reserved for the poshest dublin pubs and clubs (last year anyway).

This is just Waterford...It seems to be very expensive to go out in this city anyway lately..

Anyone else notice similar effects up and down the land?

yeah exactly , the price of drink is gone to the dogs , i usually go out with a few people an it used to be grand getting rounds , it`d work out cheapish for everyone , but over the last few months the rounds seemed to be getting dearer and dearer for the same drink , so we just stopped and now everyone gets their own .
they can charge what they like in pubs , because well people will always want drink and be willing to pay for it , myself included .
although i cant get out half as much now , bloody scandalous money to go out even if its just to the pub without a club afterwards.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,389 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lenny

What you do then OLDYELLAR is go get a 6pack of dutch into ya before you go out, so then you won't be spending half as much on drink as you would if you didn't have anything before you go out

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,230 ✭✭✭OLDYELLAR

i`d say thatd be a good idea OJ , say it`l be the only way i l see the inside of any pub for a few weeks.

I think that everyone is aware that we are being ripped off. The question is "What can we do to stop it?"

You could say "Well don't go in to those places.". Thats all well and good but when the are all (nearly all) doing it what do you do? Stop drinking! Dont think that that will happen.

There must be some solution stop them ripping us off. This country is becomming almost impossible to live in.

SO HAS ANYBODY GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS ???

I spent the summer in Dublin. The prices of drinks weren't that different to Waterford, 20-30 cent more expensive for a pint of lager.

I'm thankful I'm not a student in Dublin where rent, travel etc. is far more expensive than Waterford.

Dutch Gold is 6 for €7 everywhere. All is well :)

I'm living in Dublin and when i go out the very least I expect to pay for a pint is €4.00 . It is a terrible situation but what can be done? Another price freeze? We all know that as soon as a freeze is lifted the price will go up by another few Cent .... It would seem that we're all destined to drink cheap cans in our homes. Oh and Dutch are no longer king of the cheap Largers it's Bavaria at a whooping €1.00 which is STILL a rip off as I've bought cans of Heiniken and Carlsberg for 80c in Greece only recently( Oh and the Greeks are up in arms over euro increases:rolleyes: )

Dutch 6 for 7 is a life saver. Tastes way better than bavaria also. The price of drink in this country is disgusting. The problem is that we've tolerated this for a good while now without doing anything about it. Peoples memories of what a good price was are beginning to fade, but really that wasn't very long ago, and the economy has gone downhill since then. Thats right.

The economy has gone downhill, but prices have gone up? The picture that comes into my mind is of people in a room, thinking the roof is made of money, and they claw at it until it falls in on top of them.

A friend of mine asked me the other day what price was a pint in maynooth, since thats a little bit away from dublin. I said €3.25 for a guinness, which I somehow considered as "not too bad". But this is £2.53, and guiness used to always be £2.20 - £2.25. And of course we all know how bad dublin is.
But what can we do about this? I don't know ultimately, but the first thing is to raise peoples awareness of this. Since the celtic tiger came in, people have been even more afraid to complain, afraid of what others will think of them.
I think there should be stickies on this board giving prices for food, drink, and every other major commodity. If people can see where the rip-offs are, hopefully they can avoid them.

The only place I seem to get a half-decently priced pint is in the sports & leisure club I'm a member of...

    example prices:

    Pt. Guinness/Ale: €3.00
    Pt. Budweiser/Heineken/Carlsberg: €3.25
    Btl. Budweiser: €3.15
    Pt. Cider: €3.60

    Shot (33.5ml) Vodka: €2.40
    Glass (50ml) Baileys: €2.85

    Smirnoff Ice/Bacardi Breezer: €3.50
    WKD Blue: €3.80

Maybe that should be posted into a new thread which could become a sticky?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Sachs hotel last weekend, a Double Vodka and Coke cost me €9.40 ffs. Luckily I had already tanked up before I went in :D

I reckon we should sticky this thread and put up prices for pubs all over the city. I know i'll go where there's cheaper beer :D

Guinness Mullingar & Athlone €3.15 in most (including decent) places.

Jelly Beans machines in most pubs went from 20p to 50c at Euro changeover. I don't buy jelly beans anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭DannyD

Forget Dutch Gold , drink water instead.Dutch gold is 3.4% alcohol !
Instead get the real Dutch , Royal Dutch.Royal Dutch is 4.7% alcohol.

A pint in a late night pub in Cork costs 3.90 € which isn't that bad.A pint in a regular pub costs about €3.50 - €3.75.I can't wait until lots of pubs go bankrupt because of their greed.

Le Metro in Galway (club) is €4 for all pints and bottles.

The problem here is that it's the norm in town now and it is the best club around.

    dutch gold isn't 3.4% - don't lie.

In the club I used to work in (which is in North Co. Dublin) that would have come to €7.60

€3 for the beer shandy (when you say beer and not lager Im presuming you mean ale)
€2.90 for the rock shandy (€1.45 each for 500ml bottles of Club Orange and Club Lemon)
€1.70 for the bottle of Lucozade (Pub Size).

    Still, eh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭Leverz

what about pool tables, most bars up here was about 50p a game (steep enough) now its €1, wtf like?
Lyric I think the company is called, they also supply jukeboxes, was £1 for 5 songs now its €2.

That happened as soon as the €uro change over happened.
Think of the added revenue that these guys have now taken in since the introduction of the €.

Pity they wouldnt get new songs and cues at least ffs »8Þ

6.50 euro for a small bottle of Corona in Temple Bar, and pints were 6.10e. Those are cheap prices, aren't they, lol :)

Someone with some common sense , prices similar to 2002 :D

    Monday March 09 2009

A PUB in Tralee, Co Kerry, claims to have the lowest prices in the country.

A pint of Guinness in Quirkies Bar in Tralee town centre is €3. A pint of lager will set you back €3.50, as will a pint of cider. And a quarter bottle of wine is €3.50 and a long-neck beer €3.00.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks cost just €1.50.

Proprietor Tom Quirke, a member of the Vintners' Federation of Ireland, claimed his bar was the cheapest in the country, but he's still making a small profit because he has cut out many of the frills, such as live music.

He said his trade was up between 30-40pc.

"I noticed the trade getting bad in October. I am making a smaller profit, but a little bit of something is better than a lot of nothing," he said. "Price really does matter."

A lot of older people had stopped dropping in for a pint, but were now back.

As for his fellow vintners -- they were probably not too happy about the fact, he conceded.

    Survival

"It's about survival at the moment," he added.

He had noticed that people were going into supermarkets and buying cheap drink, or they were only coming out at the last minute before closing time.

Last week, the Competition Authority threatened to take the publicans' representative bodies, the Licensed Vintners' Association and the Vintners' Federation of Ireland, to court unless they abandoned a one-year price freeze announced last December across the State's 5,500 pubs.

The authority said the freeze would discourage publicans from cutting prices, but the vintners' bodies said they were not telling publicans what price to charge customers but were simply encouraging vintners not to increase prices. They are currently consulting with members on the matter.

I paid €4.50 for a pint of Bulmers in a fairly normal (non-fancy) pub in Cork last night.

I seem to remember paying £2.00 for a pint of the same stuff back in my student days just before the introduction of the Euro which is €2.53 ...

That's some inflation since the early 00s!

It is currently cheaper for 4 people to fly via ryanair to birmingham from dublin return and get 8 rounds of drinks in.

Was there last week for paddys.......one round of 8 x corona, one pint lager and lime plus one double gin and bitter lemon cost £18.20 (20euro). Would i even get change from a 50euro note here for that round?

10 rounds on paddys day saved us 300 euro:eek:

20 CIGGARETTES are equating to 6 euro also.........bought 200 ciggies with the last few sterling from tesco (20 euro+ saved).

    €4.50 for Bulmers. Thats good.

I paid €6.60 in The Vaults in Dublin  Last pint they got out of me.

I was in leeds last month and got triple southern comfort, two bottles of smirnoff ice, two double vodkas & red bull and a pint of stella. £19 / €21

This is true pa, but even in the supposedly more expensive pubs in the uk you can double up a spirit for a pound..........double gin £1.90 and the baby mixer(schwepps bitter lemon) was free. This was a special offer but the double spirit for a £ extra runs 24/7 and has been for years now.
