don't you have a phone book??

    *43# to enable
    #43# to disable

What would be interesting if anyone knew a prefix for a percall disablement of call waiting, handy for modem users who are getting kicked off by lousy real-life people with the cheek to call them while you are on line!!

grrr (terrible for games too, if they don't manage to kick you off the line completely your ping goes into the 1000s)

    The problems are as follows.

ISTR you get a voice after you turn it off, ya know the miserable boll1x who does the Eircom Voice prompts.

By the way a comma is a 2 second pause. If you replicate what I do manually and need more than 2 seconds try ,, for 4 seconds.

Lets say your ISP number is 011234567

You change your ISP number to.

    #43#,H,O011234567

    Meaning

    Turn Call Waiting off
    Pause 2 secs
Hangup (to shut that Eircom eeejit up)
Pickup again (he's gone now, u have dialtone and no call waiting)
Dial (that is a letter o before the 01 )

The hangup process when you finish will turn call waiting back on.

    Regedit

Search the registry for the string which normally hangs up your modem being

    ATH

    Change it to

    ATH,O*43#,H

    Meaning

    Hang Up (end internet call)
    Wait 2 Seconds
Pickup (thats an o not a zero)
    Turn on Call waiting
    Wait 2 Seconds
    Hangup Again

/me waits for the Unix Geek Variant of the above with procs and compiler switches and a diatribe on the proper use of the | command and the number of the beast .... the number of the beast is eircoms indirect access code

oooh  that registry hack is sweet, I had an idea of how to make sure it was off before dialling up, but always figured turning it back on would be a manual affair.

You still have the problem of an abnormal disconnect (much more rare with call waiting off), but your call waiting would be restablished next time you dialled in anyway!

    Yo!

The line is still enabled for FlashHook recognition with call waiting off.

FlashHook is a short (c.600MS) hangup that the exchange listens for when its configured for 'phone plus' (Eircom speak that).
If call waiting is on it is used to flick you from one channel (call) to another in the exchange and to put the other call on hold.

FlashHook is also use for 3 way calling to flick between callers while you set them up.

A FlashHook is normally an R button on your phone.

In a case where you get line hits from electrical interference to your line it can trigger FlashHook down the exchange and thats the problem you describe there rob1891

If you never need 3 way calling or Call waiting these can be turned off on your line so the Exchange ignores FlashHook permanently.

You do this by ringing up 1901 and telling the Droid to disable 'Phone Plus Services' on your line.

It will not interfere with CallAnswering if you have it...not sure about Call Forwarding.

Also remember that CallAnswering can 'notify' you with a funny noise, akin to a line hit, unless you turn 'notification while on a call' off in your CALL ANSWERING menu , dial 171 and root about in the there.

That lot should sort out a lot of routine 'line hits' that feck up your connection speed AFTER connection, your modem will frequently not renegotiate back up to the speed you originally connected at if there is a line hit.

The s10 register (in hundreths of a seconds not milliseconds) can also deal with line hits and dropping calls. The default value is 50 meaning it would drop a call during 600ms FlashHook

s10=65 will not drop the modem on a hit of 650MS (you may need to go to s10=90) being Longer than a flash hook.

Therefore when the flash hook is over (and you are back on the channel with the modem) the connection is still there and you do not have to redial and the renegotiation may be easier. You can add this into your extra modem settings so its always there and not in the registry or the dial string.

Of course if we had ISP support for v92...
