    Hi

Just a query in relation to a fibre connection i hope to get in the next few months.

If any1 has any info, please replay below.

Basically, im getting a 1gbps connection installed from linx.

Has any1 had experience in how these connections work, what specialised equipment is needed in terms of routers, switches, cabeling, converters etc etc.

P.s. if any1 works in this field and can do the above, i may have a job for you :)

Correct me if I'M wrong but the Linx is in Telehouse in London.

You are getting a feed to it from Ireland , is that what you mean?

If it is a 1Gb feed then what is the presentation? SDH SONET ATM ....any of those letters ring a bell?

    PM Me

STM1 is a dedicated point to point circuit working at 155Mbps delivered on fibre and they are about €150,000 rental ?? I can only imagion what price 1 gb will be ......

ESBI will do 155 megs off their fibre ring for €300,000~

I know of place Eircom are providing 34meg and that €70k-€80 and that conidered cheap!

Well let's see, all you have to do is:

    1. Join the LINX. That means filling out the membership form, applying, and having the existing membership accepting you. You'll need to get a few people to agree to peer with you, of course.

    2. Order your backhaul to Ireland. You can't simply run gig e all the way (unless you're feeling really extravagant and buying wavelengths on DWDM off someone). A couple of STM-16s or STM-4s should do it. You do want redundancy, don't you? Oh, and don't forget the local tail circuits in Dublin!

    3. Order your router equipment. You might get away with something like a Cisco 7300 with a couple of STM-16 cards... don't expect too much change from €200,000. If you don't already have a suitable router in Dublin then you'll need to buy one of those too. If you're going the wavelength route, then you might get away with a couple of cheap n nasty Gigabit Ethernet switches, but you'll still need a fairly hefty router somewhere to do BGP peering.

    4. Devise your routing configs. Of course, being a LINX member you'll already have your own AS number and a block of addresses from RIPE or ARIN. Make sure you register your routing policy in the RIPE database - LINX members do get picky about these things! I'm sure you'll only fly through the BGP stuff!

    5. Wait a few months for the transmission to be installed.

    6. Configure and connect up everything. Bingo! You're in business.

For a small fee I'll be only too happy to advise you on the details :-)

Unless you work for Eircom/Esat/C&W/Worldcom, why would you need a 1Gb connection into the linx?

Anyway - best way to do it would be DWDM off Esat. You could also get multiple STM-1s off eircom.

I think everyone that's posted so far should be given a free 10Mb slot on this line as payment for services rendered :)

    heh,

    should have given more details.

Basically this 1gbps port will serve allot of bandwidth intensive servers which will need the port to be honest.

Well at the moment we only forsee using 30% of the line at any one time, but we are only charged at the average monthly usage and it works out better than having 3 100mbps ports and more economical too.

I want each server to have a 10mbps connection.

SO yes, our servers will be hosted in telehouse, and i just want to reiterate the original question:

"Has any1 had experience in how these connections work, what specialised equipment is needed in terms of routers, switches, cabeling, converters etc etc."

So you want a fibre connection from the Linx to your rack in Telehouse? That sounds a lot more plausible (and smarter) than getting a 1Gb connection to Ireland :)

The Linx is in all of the Telehouse buildings. What you'll get is three cables coming from one of their switches. You'll plug each of these into three 100Mb ports on your router. Then you can either load balance these or just distribute them out. You can then use CAR to throttle the bandwidth down to whatever you need. On your router you'll also need to get IP transit from a backbone provider so everyone that's not on the linx can get to you. You'll also have to arrange peering with each of the members.

You'll need to get a block of provider independent addresses and an ASN from ripe.

I'd say the router and comms equipment will take a half cabinet to a full cabinet depending, so you might be better off with a private suite in Telehouse.

I can give you a hand if you want (for free!) - just send me a mail - ronan @ 72ndstreet.com (without the spaces - I get enough spam as it is) or else post it here.

    Ahhhh

in that case you needn't worry about telco STM and ATM type ports and will likely simply go for a cisco catalyst with layer 3 switching or not as you see fit there are different models. U will need a firewall as well.

you will connect over gigabit fibre thru the telehouse ducting, you supply it but is a doddle to install.

you should get space in telehouse east first, either rent a rack at €6k a year per or a room of your own at feck knows but less than 1GB to Ireland I should think. then contact the linx mob and tell em where u r going and they will take it from there.

PM me if u want more details.

The connection would be a 1Gb (BPF-Gb) port.

Have u dealt with telehouse/linx before.

Can u chat on irc? (either or both of u)
