Ireland v Switzerland - Match Predictions?

Its our last euro qualifier match in 2002, and the 2nd most important, the first being of course, the next russia match

hopefully, the russia match has given mick the kick in the mickey he badly needed, and is going to play a different formation, hopefully 4-3-3, like he did in the last 20mins of the germany match.

If I dont see Duff's name on the wing and Morrisons name up front, I mean it, Im going to break down in tears before the match. Having these two play in their intended positions is crucial to us getting the result we badly need.

We need to get a 2 goal difference imo, although a 3 goal difference would be completly within reach.

If Mick doesnt bollock around and manages the team properly, I'd say it'd most likely be 3-1 to Ireland, 1 by keane, 2 by morrison, both set up by duff.

Loss here is out of the question. If Ireland does fall to a loss, the euro will go even further out of our reach. and unless russia and the swiss start losing some matches, we'll be out of the running.

anybody else got some comments to make on this?

The only thing more depressing than missing out on Euro 2004 would be going to Euro 2004 with Mick as manager.

If Mick puts out a this team... Given, Kelly, O'Shea, Cunningham, Finnan, Duff, Healy, Kinsella, Reid, Morrison, Keane... Ireland will win 3-0.

If Mick puts out the same team as he put out the last day then he should be shot... and will only draw 1-1.

    Ever the optimist........ 1-0 Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭Congoose

Even after the Russia defeat, I seriously doubt that Mick has learned his lesson. He'll most likely stick to the same formula, but I reckon Ireland will get away with it this time. 2-1 sounds about right.

Micks a stubborn mule - see Harte in WC picked for every single match - so im betting on Switzerland winning by a clear goal.

I proberly should'nt be making a prediction but...

I think a draw is the best the Irish can hope for, the Swizz are not cheesy these days and will certainly be confident of a win, and McCarthy is bound to pick Harte at the back and to stick Duff up from with Keane and O'Shea will proberly start on the bench (if he gets picked)!

Ireland will lose 4-1. Lee Carsley will be the scorer.

If Kilbane's playing out left, McCarthy is a dead man. He has been warned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭BKtje

a dead man huh? ah good old internet threats :)

erm 2-1 to Ireland cos ' I want to believe'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,680 ✭✭✭Tellox

if we get a penalty and Ian harte messes it up... Mick and Ian will be shot.

I would have though that Mick would have gotten a bit of pressure from the F.A.I to re-shuffle the team a bit and try and bring in new blood(where the funk is O'Shea).

If not, same ol *****, much like many of the words on this board in relation to a certain player :)

Um Porn, i think finnan can sit this one out on the bench after his outstanding game in Russia

Looks like Stephane Henchoz could miss the game, if he does Ireland will have a better chance. Predict that we thrash them 1-0

I don't see why people are predicting clean sheets, obviously no lessons have been learned from Moscow. I predict a tight win, but would nearly be inclined to say a draw. If O Shea starts we might have more of a chance of keeping the clean sheet and trying to concentrate on solving our attacking problems, which are nearly as great as the defending ones.

Its called a 'prediction' you know...

If that smart arse comment was aimed at my "would nearly be inclined to say a draw", well it does say NEARLY, doesn't it, which means my prevoius comment (tight win) still stands.

If it was referring to my comment as to why I don't see why people are predicting a clean sheet, well then it refers to the clean sheet rather than the act of predicting. With a dodgy defence whose best chance is a kid with a few games for united under his belt, and a keeper going through the worst form of his career, I take issue with people suggesting we have what it takes to keep a clean sheet against ANYONE. So even if its a prediction (would have been better as a poll) thread, discussion is surely still allowed?

I think most of yis are being despondant too soon.

Yes the Russia match was a debacle, but the Irish players have been churning out good results despite Mick for years, and will do so again in fortress Lansdowne!

I'd hope for a 2-0 win, and Bateman, ireland have Dean Keily to fall back on, if Given looks poor in training to Mick.

I think from micks comments on Goals on Sunday, on sky he will be considering O'Shea for an overdue start!

Its the middle of thw park i worry about most, as the Holland Kinsella axis is not controlling the game, or protecting the back 4 very well.

If he puts out the same players as he did against russia and if they played in the same appauling manner we will loose. If the same players against russia improved we will scrape a draw.

Best current line up available in my view

    Given
    Kelly
    Harte
    O`shea
    Cunningham
    Healy
    Reid
    Carsley
    Duff
    Keane
    Morrisson

    Bench:
    Holland
    Mcateer
    Breen
    Kiely
    Barrett
    Doherty

I know the Russia game was a disgrace but you cannot read too much into one game. Alot of these player are players who had outstanding world cups, like Steve Finnan and had a bad night in Russia. I am not pessimistic yet and I think we should win this match but it will be a tight enough game, especially as the Swiss will fancy finishing second in the group above us if they even get a point out of it, so they will probably throw everything at us.

    1 - 0 to Ireland, tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 305 ✭✭Guy Incognito

I'd say 1-1...Breen being at fault for the goal and Kilbane playing a stormer, running into players, and losing the ball all over the pitch!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,120 ✭✭✭PH01

probably being a bit hard on the old ßollix

    Though I hope Ireland wins

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,555 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

2-1. A calamitous 3rd minute flap from Given to allow Switzerland to take the lead, but Breen shortly brings the teams back on level terms with the use of his left buttock from a Duff corner. Kilbane to score the winner with a minute to go, thus securing his place in the starting line-up for years to come.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,372 ✭✭✭Kone

    3-1 to Ireland

Keano to score 2 crackers and Clinton with an injury time strike!

Last time Ireland played Switzerland we won 2-1(That was in Lansdowne Road in 1995)

But since that like, sure I'd say the whole Swiss team has gone through a transistion just like Irelands team has.

An example of the standard of Swiss soccer(Say swiss soccer really quickly 3 times now!)can be see when FC Basle played Liverpool a week or 2 back. *

Swiss under 21s did well in the Euro championships held in Swizterland recently.

I think Ireland will win by 1-0. Hard match, with the Swiss hounding us all 90 minutes, and giving us a real run for our Euros. The scorer to be Ian Harte from a Peno...

    * not all that team were actually Swiss, but the Keeper and striker who scored were! 0_o

    Edited to suit Mirv

    It was actually 1992.

Ireland will win comfortably on Wednesday. For gods sake the Swiss couldn't even beat Albania yesterday and now they only have 3 days to recover against an Irish team in Dublin who are still fresh!

    rofl :D

If McCarthy leaves, that will be the end of Kilbane. He's a trier, but, try as he may, he's still crap.

    3-0 Ireland!

Although I do have a sneaky feeling that the great Stephane Chapuisat will pop up with a goal....
