My Dell Inspiron 3800 series laptop was running off the power supply (the ac adaptor with the green light on it) and then suddenly the whole thing just went off, as if the power had failed.

At first I thought it was the sockets that weren't working but then I realised that the green light on the ac adaptor came on when it wasn't plugged into the laptop and, when I plugged the connector into the laptop, the green light went off.
Power isn't getting through to the laptop and I was wondering if anyone could tell me why?

Is it a serious problem or is it easily fixed?
