Roy Keane has been banned for five games fined £150,000, having been found guilty of two charges of disrepute by the FA at a hearing at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton. Keane was accused of a premeditated challenge on Alf Inge Haaland - as revealed in his autobiography - and of benefiting financially through the disclosure. The ban is set to start in two weeks. It would see Keane return to action for a crucial pre-Christmas tie with Arsenal. The panel ruled that his tackle on Alf Inge Haaland was 'improperly motivated'.

It's a small piece so I've pasted the whole thing. It's taken from the indo website (here). I reckon that's fair enough myself....

The fine is a disgrace, keane makes that amount in about 2 weeks

'Improperly motivated'. I suppose Alan Shearer's attempt to break Neil Lennon's skull was 'properly motivated'?

They could hardly fine him any more? £150,000 is a lot of money to anyone. Even if he does earn that every couple of weeks, it's a decent punishment. Decent in that there isnt much more they could have done....

Other then ban him a little longer that is...

the punishment was no where near severe enough.

    hang the bastard!

er I would'nt do that, anyway who'd be brave enough...?

The ban should have been the rest of the season. The fine is meaningless unless you go nuclear and a 7 figure sum.

    Mike.

Gotta agree about the fine Mike butt 7 damn figures??
I dont think even the English FA would go that far in their search to eradicate this sort of thing.

Cantona got 8 months for attacking a fan with a karate kick...studs in.

Keane does something similar..studs in on Haalands leg and gets 5 matchs.

Is it the Utd factor that prevented him getting a longer ban?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,842 ✭✭✭s8n

    theres only one keano

he'd already been punished for the tackle 18 months ago, it's time to move on.The fa should have fined him but the ban is too much.

Ehh.... Eric Cantona played for Man Utd...

If you want to ban every player that grazes another player by showing their studs then there wouldn't be many players left in the Premier League. Jason McAteer would be banned for life!

Maybe it was 'cos Eric was French!

Ah jesus, Roy feels bad enough as it is, without getting a fine and a ban. He should be lauded for being so honest in his book. :p

    /me gets ready for flamefest

fine is enough and so is the suspension, he has already served a suspension, a farce really.
This could be taken as a freedom of speech case, not allowed to speak his mind. bol*ox me thinks

Man. Ut'd are apparently considering appealing the decision.

They shouldn't bother, tbh. Just accept the result gracefully.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

I am with you Bard I think they should just serve the sentence and finally forget about the whole thing, till Alfie Inge Haaland writes a book of course.

Have to agree alright, cannot honestly see them appealing, he knows he has to get on with it now.

I absolutely agree with you yop.
He has already been punished for this. He has alreaduy been banned.
To serve a second ban is contrary to natural justice.

PS I'm not a United supporter, and if he played for a nother club/country, I'd feel the same.

Its a disgrace to be punished twice for the same tackle, say in twenty years Alan Shearer brings out a Book saying he meant to Kick Neil Lennon in the Head, Will the FA fine 60 year old Alan €150,000.......not a hope!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Pigman

It's a complete farce to ban a player for five games that he would have missed anyway through injury. Keane should have been forced to miss the five games AFTER he made first re-appearance for United v Arsenal. Therefore the ban might actually have meant something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭BKtje

that is sorta what happened aint it?
he was supposed to be match fit (if only barely) for the liverpool game. he now will miss that and the games surrounding them...

(150,00 fine fair enough. to ban him again is telling me that the FA didnt believe Keane meant that tackle before. Either they are stupid or bow to pressure. neither is good really )

Can't see a Liverpool player being in the dock for something similar.

Exactly! Liverpool have a rare commodity known as DISIPLINE. That's one of the reasons why they are currently top of the league and still undefeated.

Either that or they are being dishonest because they are afraid to get a similar fine to the one Keane got. Keane was being honest by saying what he had done to Haaland was intentional.

I'm sure there are one or two Liverpool players that have made rash tackles and haven't spoke a word about it. Thats not disipline, thats being dishonest.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 779 ✭✭✭pendulum

Keane should have had a longer ban imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

    that have made rash tackles

So your calling Keanes's "tackle" on Haaland rash?

    I dont think so.

If it was rash he would hardly have admitted to doing it intentionally now would he?

It's a bit sad to see that obviously you can get away with an awful lot on the football pitch, just as long as you're not honest about why you did it. As mentioned above, Shearer kicks Neil Lennon in the head, then when he's brought before the FA the English captain threatens to walk out on the English side if he's punished and thus gets off. David Beckham, as England captain, and truly a terrible one, seems to be able to do what he likes with his elbows and flailing feet. Viera seems to be constantly under threat of bans from this type of behaviour, Beckham doesn't even get warned.

The self-righteous shíte being spouted about Keane's antics are quite amusing. How many of you girls ever played reasonably competetively on the football pitch? I'm not asking who was any good, but who played in a team that took things seriously, and when you went out there you went out there to win. I'm guessing very few by the reactions here, because anyone who has ever done so knows that trying to 'do' someone who has annoyed you/done you wrong in the past is hardly a rare occurence. It was a bad, ugly tackle, he deserved to walk and to be suspended for it. It was nothing out of the ordinary, probably wouldn't have been of note at all in days gone by. At least Keane admitted the motives (rather inadvertently albeit), instead of hiding behind the old excuses of "I lost my head", "I mis-timed it", it "was out of character, done in a red mist".

The English FA should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute, seen as they have one rule for nasty, honest Irish captains, and a different rule for nasty, sneaky, cowardly English captains.

Steven Gerrard nearly cut Aston Villa player Geroge Boatang in half last season, he was red-carded, banned and he publicly appologised, fortunatly its not something 'Pool players do to much of.

If Keane was being so honest then why did he try to use poetic license as his defence. "I only said that but I didn't mean it yer honor"

Hope that Alf Inge sues him now aswell, since he has been so "honest", AIH has a pretty solid case, pre-meditated attack and all that.

Come into the real world, even killers come up with some sh**e saying that they were not mentally sound, under stress etc.

Then why was the Man ****ty physio in the dock at the case to defend Keane saying that the tackle was not the cause of spalands main injury. Read the papers mate.

So coming up with some shi*e to defend yourself is being honest. It must mean something completely different where I live.

If Roy Keane had the courage of his (upcoming) convictions and was as honest as was made out, he would have held up his hands, said yes I did it on purpose, accepted his ban & fine and gone back to what he does best, promoting his book.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭BKtje

Has Roy Keane actually made a comment tho?
i know Man U are still deciding wether to apeal but who says he hasnt put his hand up and taken the ban+fine.

    B-K-DzR

He has not commented yet. No decision to appeal either, probably not

Yet again I misunderstood Yop, I assumed some intelligence and not just a child looking to make a personal attack. Removing it from the post, well that was just a master-stroke.

I stand by what I said by the way and if you wish to put up a reasonable argument against it then by all means do.

Well we have to tell the truth when it needs to be told!

I will not even bother wasting the skin of my fingers talking to about something to someone that knows nothing about football.

If you wish to back up the trash u are coming up with, with facts, please do, instead of making a laughing stock of yourself

Another man who lacks the courage of his convictions, if you didn't want anybody to see your post, then you should not have put it up in the first place. There are a few "Facts" from that post I wouldn't mind you backing up.

As for backing up what I have said, mostly News from Sky Sports website.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators, Regional West Moderators Posts: 16,724 Mod ✭✭✭✭yop

What do u want backed up?

As for SkySports!!! You have got to be kidding!! Since when have Sky Sports got the fact.

Tell me, since you know it all, who attended the case with Keane, who gave evidence.

Have you even read the book, then again, it has no pictures so I am sure it is a bit much for you isn;t it!
if you didn't want anybody to see your post, then you should not have put it up in the first place.

Didn't want you running home to your mammy now did I.
