My computer crashed a few mins ago. I restarted as usual and when windows came up it said it was loading backed up registrys or soemthing like that and then restarting.

When the computer restarted it was running settings that I had on months ago and started asking if the time is correct. My yahoo messenger and ICQ don't work either.

Anyone know why this happened and if its possible to fix, oh yes also my ISP settings were missing no Utv in dial up properties!

hmm, id check for viruses to be safe

that said, if your running windows 98 for example, you can restart in dos and do the following

    c:> scanreg /restore

then select your must current registry

we could do with more info, like what you were at the time of the crash, and wat os you have etc

those ppl like Gerry and PPC should be along shortly to give a better answe than mine :D

Happened to me a few times,
An Error Box says it will repair the registry and click ok to restart etc.

Usually the main problem is missing Registry Keys that can stop programs like Messenger working properly.

    Reinstall anything thats not working.

when your sure its all working make a backup in regedit.

Id reccomend backing it up if your installing new hardware or doing anything that could impact it (registry).

Its probably just a once off, bad caused by the crash

It happened maybe a week ago as well. It must be something I installed... just can't remember. How do I back up regedit ?

    Is it a big file?

    user.dat
    and system.dat

are hidden system files in your %windir%

copy those to cd-r or zip..

    thats manual method.

proper method is to boot to commandline
    and type scanreg /?
this will list the parameters to make a backup with scanreg..

scanreg makes a backup and then zipes it
    0001.cab is the end result.

i use windows 2000 pro sp2 on all machines..

a great application for registry backups is
a 3rd party application called configsafe!

    can be restored from commandline
    or booting floppy..
