can i install an old version of word on XP

i have windows XP but only got microsoft works with it. can i install office 97 on it. i also have word 2000 will this work? will there be any issues with licences? will it be stable?. i run excel 97 on windows 2000 in work and it gives a few problems but otherwise runs smoothly. thanks

it was slow and horrible to use, hanging all the time, back to Office 2000 I went and the problems went away.
