Exactly what I was going to say.

One way is through affiliate links/networks e.g. cj.com . I know guys making 200-300 euro a month with sites just promoting the services of other companies, and this is only something they do on the side/spare time. Obviously, there is a lot more to it then being able to make a web page, it's all in the marketing and promotion. All I'm saying is, it can be done :)

You have to ask yourself what you're in it for though. If it's purely a hobby, then a little ad or whatever is okay to help finance any associated costs. If you're going for a commercial website, you really need to be careful. There's a thin line between having a site with content that's going to make people return, and one with the same content, but ad-ridden enough to make people scarper. And a big NO to pop-ups and their younger but equally annoying cousin the pop-under in all cases.

Exactly! A lot of the web directories will refuse submissions if they contain too many affiliate links.
There are ways of using the affiliation to complement a site, but a lot of people seem to rely too heavily on it and end up with very little else apart from the affiliate links.

But is it really worth it? I mean creating a website takes ages, and keeping user interest takes a lot of effort to, with frequent updates and additions etc. I mean that's about €6.50-€10 a day.. and if you're spending an hour a day at it and a few more at the weekend it's not exactly a great profit. And that's before you pay for any associated costs. Even if you're not buying hosting or domain names, you still have to connect to the internet to upload stuff, maintenance, etc.

Go back in time to about 1997, set up a Web site and IPO/sell it before March 2000 :)

Seriously, look at first principles - you’re either:
    • Selling a good - electronic (e.g. Nokia ringtones, software) or physical (e.g. mail order Viagra)
    • Selling a service - electronic (e.g. Hosting, Data/content) or physical (e.g. courier service)
    • Being sponsored or gaining revenue from advertising/click-thru.

In all cases you have to look at your entire model from end to end. There’s no point rushing into a business without proper research. Even with the affiliate model, mooted previously, you will have to do attract people with content that would have them going to your site and hence also to relevant affiliates (ergo, more money for you).

Your best bet is to ask what you can do or enjoy doing and using a Web site to sell that good/service. Like one of the Boards regulars who is into wrestling and so now (last time I checked) will sell wrestling goods online.

The Internet is a tool, not an end in itself. Don’t confuse the dancer with the dance.

    Serious reply here :)

A porn site. Make sure its a good one, obviously a pay site and make sure to watch out for password traders.

I'd have to agree. The Adult industry is one of the few that can make money, though, like any other business you need to think it out properly. We can't host it for you, as it's against Irish law, but you wouldn't have much difficulty getting it hosted in the US or even mainland Europe.

The adult industry does make money but could you live with the shame?

Pretty soon it will be possible to download movies and pretty much all types of media from the internet - you could earn a fair bit by setting up a sophisticated, search-engine-friendly movie database and linking to amazon or some other e-retailer.

The shame element is a factor, but the original post was enquiring about making money online without mentioning any ethical problems etc.,

Apart from the shame which is subjective when you think about it. Running a porn site is not easy. I should know.

    Erm, no actually I don't :p

The major problems with porn sites are passwords and content. If you go around stealing other sites content your in alot of trouble. Also the bandwidth is high you gotta make sure they cache everything!

surely the last thing you want is to cache(catch) anything....

    Hi Kate,

Adult entertainment is NOT the only way to earn money on the Web. Have you thought about developing your own information product? I have done so and market it successfully on the Web.

If you want, you can PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,
    Tommy Kavanagh.

P.S. - I'm NOT referring to the site in my sig file. That's just new little project I'm experimenting with :-)
