The UK's first telecommunications ombudsman will begin resolving complaints about telecommunications services from 01 January 2003. Speaking at the e-Security Conference 2002 in London, former information commissioner Elizabeth France said her new role allows her to take action on behalf of individual consumers who feel they have been mistreated by a telecoms company. The new Office of the Telecommunications Ombudsman (Otelo) has the power to demand an apology, force a company to provide a service or make a company pay compensation of up to STG5,000.

We have a few members who are getting an internet connection of 14.4kbit/s, the ODTR says that Eircom aren't oblidged to provide a minimum internet service (not until the new EU directive comes into force next year any way) so they can do nothing.

Me thinks we could use a telecom's ombusman.

Hmmmm, well, the new EU directive, i believe, allows the individual states to set a minimum data rate.

IMO it will probably be 9.6kbps or 14.4kbps, not to be a pessimist or anything but it will be fax based more than internet access based.

Nopey the directive lets you do quite a bit more than that.

If you are interested read the ODTR document 'ODTR Consultation on the future delivery of broadband in Ireland', read the bit on European Union Policy ...
