Does anyone know anything about this organisation? Do they have any power or are they just another pressure group?

not much else really that you could expect them all (including eircom) to agree on.

pretty standard industry talking shop. not much more.

    arose for two reasons

    (1) in the late 90's there was no voice for the ISPs. therefore on things like the Information society Commission (at that time a powerful voice with clout) individual ISPs were represented, but ISPs as a whole were not. after the formation of the ISPAI it became the voice of the ISPs on that and other bodies

    (2) the only time the ISPs met was at public fora. it was realised that it would be useful if they had an meeting place of their own. not for any specific purpose, but most industries have such meeting places. also, in cases of emergency it could speak for the ISPs as a group if their shared interests were threatened and act as a foil to the then up and coming IIA and other bodies.

if you are waiting for this lot to introduce broadband or fraico or do anything else useful, forget it. its a sort of lowest common denominator talk shop. the press release page gives a fair indication of its energy and activity levels. and the page showing the representatives from the various companies also says a lot (drawn from the middle level, intelligent enough to attend a meeting and pick up on anything useful but one step down from the decision makers)

I know the people who put the site together & believe me this organisation is a 'cover story for a joke'.

Mid-Late 90's there was a lot of talk about internet child porn in the media. The Government decided to 'take action' in order to pre-empt any future finger-pointing. The ISPs were told by the Government to monitor the situation or be regulated. They chose to 'monitor' the situation.

The ISPAI is nothing more that a website, empty office space & an answering machine. Waste of money (probably tax-payers).

I've had that confirmed in the past by a few ISP reps as well. Talking shop, waste of time, cover story (and not even a very good one at that)

Bet you'd still get more satisfaction from them then when you ring €ircon.

    On the sites Mission statement:
To encourage an open and competitive environment, and to resist anti-competitive policies and practices.

I also noticed that the last time news was posted was over 3 years ago
