    Broadband connections shoot up

    11:11

The number of homes with broadband in the UK has risen by more than 60 per cent in the past three months, according to new figures.

The latest research from industry regulator Oftel shows that 13 per cent of homes are broadband enabled, nine per cent with cable modem and four per cent with ADSL.

Overall Internet usage in the UK remains steady, with 42 per cent of UK homes connected and 50 per cent of adults going online. Usage is quite heavily skewed to higher income households; 74 per cent with an annual income over £30,000 are connected but only 22 per cent where incomes fall below £17,500. The survey was conducted in August 2002.

Oftel also discovered that 57 per cent of Internet users who are still on dial-up connections are either 'not very interested' or 'not interested at all' in broadband.

The combination of limited access at lower incomes and a widespread apathy towards broadband suggest that talk of a Broadband Britain may prove to be wishful thinking.
