Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Goodevening.

I was wondering if anyone, inc admins would there be much support for a Law section in the society section of boards.ie. As the Law is everchanging it would be good to have links and discussions about cases and judgements of the Irish courts. I'll leave it at that for now However I look forward to any interest or feed back.
    Sincerly
    Grimes.

Please free feel to Pm me on mIRC or Boards.ie

Id also be interestd in admin as a Law student myself.

Can't the Politics and Humanities boards do this? No need for a new board.

Yea, i feel that it would be a really good section on boards.ie.

The humanities board is too general - you need to pin point the board.

Alot of people take interest in law, as well as that people are studieng it in college. Definit yes!

    Grimes for admin.

Given the amount of utter tripe I've seen posted to boards.ie masquerading as legal knowledge, I'd very much doubt that a law board would improve this situation - if anything you'd just end up with MORE tripe in a concentrated space... Besides, the Humanities and Politics boards aren't exactly overflowing with legal discussions are they? In fact the only major one of late has been some muppets on the Games board trying to justify piracy :)

I'd be very interested in a law section. I dont know anything professionally about law but I do keep a close eye on the legal system.

I also wouldn't mind helping out being a mod on that section if ya all are up for it.

maybe i should have said "No this board is a waste of space", that way shinji would disagree with me and vote for this board...

I believe that a specific Law Forum would be a valuable addition to Boards.ie.

Law impinges on the everyday lives of all of us........... an opportunity to debate issues and the evolving nature of Law would be a worthwhile and socially-conscious exercise. Such a Forum might well also prove to be a driving force to challenge and correct the inconsistencies and inadeqacies existing in the present Irish legal system. And many, myself included, would welcome a forum where legal advice (on a no-win, no-fee basis of course :) ) could be gleaned from our peers.

Debate on many aspects of Law -- eg, Family Law and Civil Law -- would be incongruous in Politics. Law deserves a Forum to itself.

    I fully support this proposal.

Not enough traffic to warrant it.

The main thing is if someone gave bad advice
    Someone could blame boards.ie
    (Maybe even sue)
No one should give legal advice unless they’re a solicitor.

I don't think haveing a board for leagal advice is a good idea.

now if you can find 3-4 solicitors who read the boads and would be mods for it then it might work but other than that i think it's dangers.

We've had this discussion numerous times before...

My legal opinion on it is as follows is....
The propensity for bad advice to be dispensed would negative and benefits accruing from its existence, up to a point at which boards.ie would, potentially, not be able to obviate liability.

In laymans terms...Idiots purporting to have knowledge in the area and then even bigger idiots relying on the advice.

Although we have a few law students floating around, no practioners (yet) afaik- so there in itself leaves room for an extremly high percentage of "unqualified" advice.

Short of getting Paddy McEntee to mod the board, its a non-runner IMO :)

I echo what Coyote and Amp say, not enough traffic either
    Thumbs down all the way.

A disclaimer would grant boards.ie an immunutiy from suite. I am currently conferring with three barristers on the prospect of lagalities and the possibility of bad advice on boards. However I would be more than willing to prepare , with legal advice a disclaimer. It could also be argued that any post on boards which complains about an organisation unjustly or "slated" an individual would be liable under defimation.
Please do not dismiss the prospect out of hand. I currently am partitioning names in support of a legal board. THis would garuntee a usage of the section itself in regards to previous posts in thins thread where it wasimplied that not alot of people would visit . (Stated Shinji)

Maybe a safer approach would be to get in touch with the Free Legal Advice Centre (http://www.flac.ie) and ask them whether a bulletin board would be of interest to them.

I'm sure they'd be into increased access and they surely know what they're doing in the realms of answering dumb-ass questions.

    Good call there Dapper Gent.

I was member of FLAC for my 1st 2 years in college. I dont know anyone specifically involved with them atm but maybe DeV or someone could give them a call, conveying the potential to help out a rather flourishing online community.

Similar to the way the Gardening board was established, when someone found somebody who was actually *qualified* to give advice.

My opinion is no, leave it in the relevant section, it has less chance of being perceived as legal advice then.
Grimes, are you the Mr. Grimes who has had the occassional "visit" to the Four Courts?

build it and they will come?

Ive seen a few posts of people wondering where are they going to find out who & where specialises in certain types of law.

If say somebody wants information on where to turn on say 'family law' there could be nobody in their area, or maybe there is but they have no way of finding out.

I think its a good idea and would be beneficial for the boards. Maybe you haven't seen many law posts because there are only general boards where it fits in?
