Trying to set up an "Active" Seti@Home Team

    Hi Folks,

A lot of you probably already know about SETI@Home (if not go here,
    http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ )
and what they do. It can be a bit of fun as everyone gets to take
part of a big project with out any effort.

I'm been with this for over 3 years. I'm trying to start a team (yes,
you can form teams). Is anyone interested?

    Basically the story is this:

The SETI@home program is a special kind of screensaver. Like other
screensavers it starts up when you leave your computer unattended, and
it shuts down as soon as you return to work. What it does in the
interim is unique. While you are getting coffee, or having lunch or
sleeping, your computer will be helping the Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence by analyzing data specially captured by
    the world's largest radio telescope.

    1) You download a client from here:
    http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html

    - This can be graphical which is pretty and very useful initially as
    it explains what's it's processing
    - Later you can get a command line client which can be up to 10-20%
    faster.

    2) The client downloads a 340K space sample (1 unit) to analyse over 4
to 12 hours depending on how fast your rig is.

    3) You upload the results via the client. The client then downloads
    the next unit.

    4) You can get a front end client for the command line version which
caches several units which saves you having to connect to the net
every 4 - 12 hours to get the next unit. Here:
    http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/

The SETI team has now be set up and is called "The Celtic SETI
Hunters". This can be modified later if the team reflect differently.

Any existing SETI@home souls interested can join by going to:
    http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_154933.html
and from there click join. You need your username and seti password.

If you are interested and have yet to try Seti@Home I would suggest
going to the Homepage, download the client. Try it out for a few days.
If you think it's cool then join the team!

I hope to add a html link to the team page so everyone can get an
indepth look at the systems we use, ie the kind of
machine/memory/cpu/os each member of the team use.

Again, client can be got at:
    http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html Go for the command
line version if you wish to cache your units. (ie do 6 units in the
    trot before uploading the results).
Again, A cache manager like seti driver will do that for you here:
    http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/

Further interest, the top 1000 Ireland users are:
    http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/country_103.html

I'd love to get a group of us together and give it a whirl. Email me
at jamesryan@utvinternet.com if you are interested.

    Regards,
    James

Considering that an active Irish group exists here, I'll consider joining the team here if the take up elsewhere is low. The previous team I was in became inactive and prompted the move to a more pro-active team.

    James
