SEO is a complex and specialised field tbh.
    A good starting point:
    1. W3C compliant HTML or XHTML
    2. Proper use of title tags and all metatags
    3. Do not spam search engines
    4. Forget about most automatic submission tools - they don't work
    5. Provide objective descriptions when submitting to directories

Have other sites link to you, make sure the keyword you submit are also on the content of your site. Go back to the search engines monthly to check your rank

Be careful who you link to... FFA pages are not going to help
