    SATELLITE INTERNET

A new national £1.5 million pilot satellite Internet project has been started. Called the V SAT Internet system, it is to provide Internet access in Mayo (including Clare Island) in Meath, and Offaly. It is expected that schools, libraries, community centres and small businesses in the three areas will use it.

The pilot project will provide high speed Internet access by way of a satellite dish without the need for a telephone line. It is therefore suited for remoter, rural areas of the country and specifically offshore islands.

In theory, the connection speeds could be over three hundred times faster than using a modem. Wouldn't it be nice to have the system in County Clare if the pilot proves successful?
