    hey there
would any of you kind decent folk be able to sort out an arguement i keep having with one of my dear friends regarding the lyrics to 'alleluia' sung by the late great jeff buckley.
please, just if you could type out the lyrics and send them to me or something, because she's SO wrong and it's really getting annoying.
i'd really appreciate it, thanx a million

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king composing hallelujah

    Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah .... .

    Baby i've been here before
I've seen this room and i've walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

    Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

Well there was a time when you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Well, maybe there's a god above
But all i've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

    Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ....

    God bless Google.

Beautiful song. Stunning. :) By the way, I recommend listening to the original Leonard Cohen version too. There's some different lyrics in that. Equally stunning, however.

have to say i hated the leonard cohen version, i heard it had 5 of the same versus and 5 more (that's 10 altogther)

my faves would be gunshot glitter,
grace and what will you see (i believe its also called father on earlier material) also his version of kanga*roo....wow, shivers up my spine

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Ah c'mon now, Cohen's version is just as brilliant.

Get the Jeff Buckley Live in Chicago DVD/vhs.. It's ****ing amazing. Amazing to see him live, doing improv introductions to songs, like the true musician he was.

i've never heard leonard cohen singing it, all i know is jeff buckley's version always makes me cry. as in every time...... i don't have it on cd or i'd be permanently in floods. i really must get some of his stuff.... and skylarkin on the 19th....

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

thats the 29th...just in case that wasnt a typo

pie-i dont know why i dont like it, its always being praised so much-i think his voice just pisses me off. i suspect if i hadnt heard the jeff buckley version first i wouldnt be so against it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 747 ✭✭✭Cherry

I heard the Jeff Buckley version first.. & I prefer the entire Leonard Cohen version, extra verses & all. I don't like L.C's voice but Jeff Buckley singing that version would be spectacular..

hmm, yea i'm much like drowner on this one..heard the jeff - type song version first, and i really love it, and then after ages i heard cohen singin it... just didn't seem quite right.. still, maybe i'll be givin it another chance and a brand new listen and all that coz all you good-music-taste people seem to be keen on it :) we'll see..

hmmm and yeah roll on the 29th..

O also i've been trying for a million years to figure out how to make my (craaaaazzy soul) geetaa play hallelujah, so if any of you lovelies (and noooo, i'm not just flattering you so you'll help me..) would care to enlighten me with some great teaching insights, that'd be peachy!

I can only sing it, sorry. Plus I can't play any guitar at all so I'm no help anyway.. :)

Speaking of singing it.. my friend Clíodhna sings Hallelujah beautifully.

    or
Buckley EPs Unearthed For Box Set

The excavation of Jeff's recorded output continues on Nov. 25th with the release of the five-disc box set "The Grace EPs."
The box will feature five EPs created in conjunction with Buckley's 1994 Columbia debut "Grace," two of which were never released commercially. A bonus studio track, "Tongue," has also been added to one of the EPs; the box sports 14 non-album tracks in all.

The box includes the original artwork for the EPs "Live From the Bataclan," "The Grace EP" (Australian promo), "Last Goodbye" (Japanese release), "So Real" (Dutch promo), and "Peyote Radio Theatre" (U.S. promo). Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, provides liner notes with contributions from Buckley's band members Mick Grondahl, Michael Tighe, and Matt Johnson.

Featured in the box will be alternate or live versions of album tracks "Dream Brother," "Hallelujah," "Grace," "Mojo Pin," "Last Goodbye," and "So Real," as well as covers of songs by Van Morrison ("The Way Young Lovers Do") and Big Star ("Kanga-Roo"). Three versions of the title track from "Grace" are included.

The box follows the impending release of "Songs to No One" (Knitting Factory/Evolver), a compilation of previously unreleased tracks featuring Buckley in collaboration with noted guitarist/Gods & Monsters principal Gary Lucas.

Here is the track listing for "The Grace EPs":

    "Live From the Bataclan"
    "Dream Brother"
    "The Way Young Lovers Do"
Medley: "Je Rien Connais Pas La Fin" / "Hymne a L'Amour"
    "Hallelujah"
