Does anyone know how I can configure my region-2 dvd player so that it will play region-1 dvds? And is it expensive to do?

Depending on the make and model a code may be entered using a remote control. (look on this page for the links)Or you could look at www.techtronics.com

Post a make and model for your player as some players can be hacked by remote others will need to be chipped.

Keep well away from Techtronics they are notorious for extremely bad Customer Service.

But techtronics are a great source of information (I found loads of information there) ... my DVD player has a mod made by them..

Could someone post up some places that chip DVD players.
    Preferably in Dublin.
I got a Philips one but the remote hack doesnt work (it needs an all for one remote) also Philips players can only be changed a certain amount of times before they lock on the last region selected.

or you could just buy a multi region dvd player like me,

theres a good shop on the keys can't remember the name, saw a few dvd region free compatible players ,

so handy but you forget some times when you loan a mate a film - they can't play

Are you thinking of Richer Sounds, up arround the ha'penny bridge? They've got a website, www.richersounds.ie

Also, there's a very good 'hacks' page on DVD Reviewer

Bought the kit from him and did it myself, cost was €25.
He will do installation, for an extra charge of course.

You don't necessarily need the all for one remote, I have a Philips DVD711 and the first remote hack I came across on the web said I needed a one for all (which I had), that did not work.
I went searching again and found a hack for use with the normal remote, that did work.
    What model is your player?

    Correct.

I was able to do the One4all hack with my philips DVD I also done it for a few friends. I used the One4 all four Digital remote but I had to use the VCR button instead of the Aux button as the setup code won't program onto the AUX button but will on the VCR button. The Ordinary remote hack is not RCE compatible whereas the ONE4ALL one is.
Instructions for this hack are here> http://www.regionfreedvd.net/player/philips.html

Should work on all Philips and AFAIK some grundig and matsui Players but It doesn't do Macrovision unfortunatley.

Yeah but I didnt buy it, my parents did.

The normal remote hack wont work on this player I already tried it.
The model number is Philips DVD 751. It should use the 750 hack.

Tell us what codes you tried, we might be able to suggest alternative codes.

I went out and bought the One For All 6 (URC 7560) and unlocked it.
Well at least I think it has been unlocked, I only have region 2 dvds and one region 0 (Best of The Best, not porn) so I'm not sure if it is unlocked.

For reference sake I tried the codes on:

    http://www.regionfreedvd.net/player/philips.html

    and

    http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/full/philips750.asp

    Neither worked.

If there is a disc in the drive, take it out and close the drive.
Power the unit off and then back on, "no disc" should be displayed.

Using the Philips remote, press [play] [1] [5] [9] in sequence.
    The display should change to
Key in 004001000140 (it will allow this 12 digit number even though there are only 11 spaces).
Press and hold [play] until the player reboots (screen will go blue).

Your player should now be a region 1.

To change it back to region 2, use the same procedure, just substitute 002000128156 for the code.

You can only do this hack a limited number of times after which you player will lock to the last region selected that is why the One for All hack is better plus it is all region meaning you have to do it once only and your sorted for good. If anybody has used up all their region changes and now has a region locked player the One for all hack will still work for your player.

What is macrovision, how does it affect a dvd player and how do I switch it off?

How do you know they didn't work?
You won't get any confirmation from your player that the hack worked it will just go to standby or display NODISC after the hack the only way to know is to stick in a disc from another region

    Cheers

Macrovision is a copy protection measure built into most DVD players it is triggered by a single bit flag at the start of the disc which tells the player to add the Macrovision signal to the video output what is does is confuse the automatic gain control on your VCR resulting in a picture which varies from very dark to very bright over an over very quickly it is very distracting to look at and succesfully destroys the entertainment value of a copied film.
As for removal some players can be remote hacked but most including Philips need a hardware modification the only other way is to get a device like a Macbuster to restore the proper sync signal I can't help you find one buy they sometimes are sold under the guise of sync correction devices.

Maplin sell such an item (as you would expect) - staff'll know what you're looking for. Cheapish too (under 25 sterling as I recall).
