PRIVATE companies in the communications and technology area should be investing more in the broadband rollout, the Taoiseach said.

Speaking in the Dail, Bertie Ahern said the government is spending "an enormous amount of money on broadband", adding: "It is unfortunate that so much is being left to the State and it is a pity the ICT companies would not invest more in it."

Not much of article, but better then no mention at all...

EDIT: Article can be found here.

Does anyone know how much Bertie has spent on broadband.

Cos I was of the opinion that broadband was practically non existent in this country bar the satellite broadband (which is not really ture broadband anyway)

Did a little bit of digging on this. Turns out that the quote is from a debate yesterday afternoon. You can find it by go throught the following (Its a frames based site)
    1. go to http://www.gov.ie/debates-02/frame.htm
    2. Click on the pretty picture of Dail Eireann
    3. Click on November - 19
    4. Click on Ceisteanna - Questions
There follows a long and rambling debate between the Ahern, Kenny, Rabbitte and others on the Ireland-America Economic Advisory Board.

Whats interesting is to search on the word broadband and notice that each of the three main party leaders have used the word more than once and in an almost comfortably offhand way. This strongly suggests that the word has entered common usage and that these people are growing comfortable with it.

I think that that indicates an opening.......

Well done to IOFFL for raising awareness and educating the unwashed to this extent!

    Next step !!!

how are companies supposed to invest in this when they are faced with eircoms complete and utter failure to allow competition what are companies supposed to do build the infrastructure themselves. just read Anthony Trollope's The Way We Live Now if you want to understand how infrastructure gets built companies put it in with investors money they go bust gov either bails them out or takes over infrastructure etc. etc etc.
for as comparison read tony blairs latest comments i can't stand the guy but it makes more sense than anything bertie has ever uttered
