The artwork for most Cathedral albums is class like Forest of Equilibrium ... my favourite cover ever though is probably Tales from The Thousand Lakes by Amorphis ... also Scum by Napalm Death and Left Hand Path by entombed are nice to look at.

I really really love the original cover for Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction that got banned back in the day.

Lucky for me I managed to find a copy of the original vinyl in London.

It's usually printed in the center of the CD leaflets of the album now.

Opeth's Deliverance is quite a fantastic album cover.
    So deep and sorrowfull.
    big_org.jpg

    And also, Opeth's Blackwater Park
    So deep and ominous.
    61363.jpg

And not exactly for it's cover art, but more the inlay art, Katatonia's 'Tonight's Decision'.

But personally my favourite cover is Spiritualized - Ladies & Gentlemen.. whole inlay is great in fact ..

"Spiritualized may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery." etc. etc.

    nirvana - in utero, incesticide

my favs. from my record collection...there was a morbid angel one i had which was dirt cool, but its long lost and cant remember the name of the album :(

strangly pretty much everyone who's posted on this thread has mentioned really dark death metal type stuff and posted pics of really dark depressing stuff...doesnt anyone know of any happy albums with good artwork ???

Aside from the usual round up of "Zorg the Impaler" fantasy art, I feel the urge to nominate White Zombies "Supersexyswingingsounds". That or the Stones "Exile on Main Street".

    Bonded by Blood - Exodus

The original cover showing the evil/good siamese babies about to tear each other apart - lovely - describes the miusic on the album perfectly.

The Berzerker's CG version of their Iron Dragon that adorns the cover of Dissimulate is quite brilliant:

I agree, Maiden generally do great covers, even Best of The Beast. Another favourite of mine is AC/DC - Ballbreaker, it's class.

Most Iron Maiden covers, the Gn'R 'appetite' cover (both the official and banned one), Metaloaf's Bat of of Hell cover, the original cover for Jimi Hendrix' "Electric Ladyland" album ... mmmm .. so many boobies ... hehe :D

And, one that everyone overlooks for its simplicity - the Black cover by Metallica. In a genre filled with stereotyped gothic imagery, skulls, pentagrams, etc, it IS refreshingly different and original.

Would I consider any of these to be the best album cover ever? I don't know, but I DO consider them to be a cut above the rest out there at any rate.

Tool's album covers are cool, especially Lateralus. Also Opeth has class album covers like Blackwater Park.

Despite being a class abum that Fistful of Metal cover is badly drawn.

    That Santana album
    Nevermind

Stuff like that is pretty class. It doesn't need to be all this death metal stuff. Admittedly though, a lot of their covers are pretty inspiring.

    Oh, and Radiohead, the Bends.
