Current build of choice?

Within reason I was wondering what your current build of choice would be. I'm talking affordable here not €10000 pc bliss. I'm in the planning stages of a new build for next year and I have been an Athlon man for a few years now but the P4 looks mighty attractive at the moment. If I hold out I suppose the Athlon may be the choice by next year.
Almost forgot why I was inspired to ask this question. I'm trying to find those sites that list their optimal setups - you know game machine, ultra machine etc. and one that is kept up to date.

Arstechnica's system guides are good if a little pricey.

If you can hold out for it, the XP2800 might tickle your fancy, but the problem with AMD at the moment is they're upping the prices of the Athlons. Where I used to buy Athlons cause they were cheaper and same performance (or slightly less), this is changing.

GeForce FX early next year, woopee. Tom's Hardware (not my fave admittedly) has a few comparisons of CPUs at the moment. As do Anandtech AFAIK. I'm not aware of any good "ultimate system" guides though. I know Maximum PC do one every year that's pretty decent, but is outdated a few weeks after it's out (sometimes even by the time it hits the stands).
