Its taking an age to get from push button to desktop these days
with a 1 min pause between Starting Win98 and the dos scroll then another pause of similair length from C:// and the end of dos to the desktop lighting up.

    Any thoughts?

    Mike.

Open up regedit (type regedit in the run dialog box) and go to the following two locations:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion /Run

Delete anything you don't really need. (You should be able to delete them all without doing any damage)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion /Run

    The same again.

Those Reg Keys control what apps Windows runs on start up. Also anything in the startup folder of the start menu runs.

Removing them should speed things up a bit.

Ah here, take care with RegEdit... it's evil.

If he sticks *strictly* to the Run Keys for Win98 in CURRENT_USER and LOCAL_MACHINE no damage will be done.

    But be careful anyway ;)

Sorry Mike typo in those locations above:
(Should have read over them before posting considering the damage you can do)

He, he! Its just as well I ignored your advice and used something else - I did a google and someone suggested going into DOS and using scanreg/fix to rebuild the reg and put all the bits in the right
places. Anyway I just booted from cold and it worked, about 40 seconds this time. I saw a thread on www.annoyances.org
in which some chap was waiting 7 mins!

The Run key paths are pretty unique anyway. You'd have copped on that it was the Windows subdir before too long anyway ;)

40 seconds? Damn! I'm generally waiting up to 3 minutes :( What exactly did you do in DOS? i.e. command lines etc.

Heres what I did to speed things up.

    Restart into DOS
then type scanreg/fix hit return and a blue screen will appear and a simple graphic showing the reg being cleaned and buffed up all shiney! :D

Then simply "ctrl-alt-del" back into Windows.

    Mike.
