Right, Finally managed a decent connection with the help of one of these .
(put my 31.2kbps connection up to 44kbps - came with the dsl, just they forgot to take it back :D ),
    and a decent Init String.
Im getting 50.6kbps -> 53.2kbps (could be false, i dont know), but im getting the worst ping, download rates and slow page loading.

Could there be anything wrong with my Modem settings ?
I use the internet mainly for downloading and gaming, so i need good pings and rates.
can someone suggest the best modem settings for these??

What are the download speeds you're getting?

I don't know how to resolve it but i might be able to explain it.

When the modem is handshaking it starts at a low speed and negotiates up to higher and higher speeds(with the modem you're dialling into). Once the modem gets a reply for the speed it requests - it tries a higher one. The problem is that the modem negotiates a speed that's too high to send alot of data(works for small amounts like speed negotiating) and when you actually go to use it - chunks of the data have to be resent all the time, thus the ping times go through the roof and browsing etc is slow.

perhaps if it's really bad you could lock your modem to 336 -
try the init string s37=19n0, this tells it to negotiate to 336(19) accept nothing else(n0)
