Well, the Scottish Irish bid has made it into the short list. But there are three other countries with it. It is the headline on Ireland.com anyone know what the other countries are?

My guess would be Austria-Swiss, The Nordic one, and probably Russia...

It would have been great to host the euro championships but i'm not gutted that we didnt get it-would you trust the fai with it? I, for one wouldnt! I'm guessing it was the lack of 2 guaranteed stadia that put an end to our chances....very intuitive, dont u think!

    Saves them a fortune

true, but the revenue it would have generated would have been a bigger "fortune"

a great chance goes a begging.

It said on the radio this morning, it would have generated 50 million for the country if we had got it.
It would have cost us alot more to build the stadium.

Yes but you would still have the stadium afterwards. There is no reason why the stadium should not be able to be a profitable entity once it is built.

That's still a heap of money for the government to find in this current economic siuation.

Maybe a solution would be a joint venture between the Gov, FAI, IRFU and the GAA if they could be persuaded, along with some corporate sponsorship. That way soccer would not be played on a Gaelic ground and it may be a good way for the GAA to ease relaxation of the rule. Also if it was built in a regional centre like Athy or Athlone in the midlands, where it is not too far from anywhere. Also then our two stadia would be in different town if it came to possibly hosting another championships in the future.

Thing is you want stadiums where there are a lot of people.

Don't think many people will travel to athlone for a midweek footie game cos they'd have to take time off work.

I realise people will say, but what about the people living in that area. Thing is would they be able to fill it? Also you would need good transport too/from stadium + improve roads for the etxra traffic etc.

Still think building it in Dublin is the best bet. Maybe Cork or somewhere else with a high population Density that would fill a 50,000+ stadium.
