56k to DSL //gaming server for 2

I want to host a game on my DSL with 1 56k guy connecting but he cant connect and times out ,we both live in Clondalkin about mile and half away. But he always goes 999 ping. This is on MOH BF and UT3. But when a mate in Scotland joins he gets 140 ping with his 56k. I havent gone up to my mates to have a look to make sure…

I havent gone up to my mates to have a look to make sure his model is tweaked but still shouldnt ping out at 999 every time.
I could join US servers for MOH and ping 220 when i have 56k.

Anyone know what could cause such a large spike.

Has he tried running a tracert to your host?
