how much did you build that beast for??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 625 ✭✭✭ThreadKiller

Been buying the components over about eight months & upgrading as I went, I reckon all in all it cost me about €4,000.

Next step is to add another hdd & set up Raid.

you consider this 'boasting' ? 4000 euros for this low spec machine ?

Great PC but miles to expensive --

Just got for a mate the following from Dell

    2.4Gig
    1GB Ram
    120GB HDD
    17"
    64MB Video
    Live! Sound
    DVD Burner
    Firewire
    XP Pro

for 2800 delivered with 3 year warranty.

If I was to add in the rest of the hardware you have there I still would get it for almost a grand cheaper, with the monitor, better processor and 3 year warranty - as I said good pc but not for that money.

    Gluck with it anyway

Err is there a point to this thread?
And is there a point in having 1.5Gb of RAM?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 84 ✭✭ironape

yeah, wouldn't you have to be running a couple of instances of photoshop and playin a game and rendering a 3d image (or lots of other stuff) to even USE all that RAM? I have 256Mb and I NEVER have a problem.

Not much to boast about. If I had spent 4,000 on that I'd be ashamed of myself tbh.

Actually no. I find a big difference in having more than 256mb of ram both in games and in many of the applications I use. Rendering 3D stuff can easily use hundreds of mb of ram without even trying. Likewise working on stuff for print you could have lots of very large 50+mb images. 256mb of ram is no way enough for that kind of work. Even some games like OFP and Falcon will see a performance improvment with 512mb. :)

Incidentally 4k is way too much for that rig. It should have cost about 2.5k at most buying new. I hope there was a very good monitor in there for 4k.

BTW What kind of magic computer do you have that never has a problem. ;)

Oh yeah and Wook can you break that down for us and let us know where you got all that stuff?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭Wook

was an original machine bought for little money and then slowly upgraded to where i am now.
Loads of second hand stuff in there as well.
but it all works and i am happy :)
actually to make a small point, i am not boasting about my rig, but merely answering the original posters question.

Hilarious, I want to know where you bought the parts.
You don't say what type of ram you have. For that price,
I would have at expected dual ddr, and an XP2800 chip.
What sort of video card is it? Again for 4000 I'd expect
a 9700 pro, and widescreen tv thrown in.

For 1900 euro, I've recently built the following machine for a friend:

    p4 2.4 ( 533 bus )
    512mb pc2700 ddr
    80gb western digital 7200 with 8mb cache
    48x cdrw
    16x dvd
    gf4 ti4200 128mb
    zip 250 internal
    logitech cordless mouse
    ms keyboard
    lg flatron 19" monitor

I was wondering to myself whether this was a lukewarm deal or what, but your pc makes it look like a steal :)

( Any extra components your pc has could be bought for about 500 - 600 euro extra roughly , but some of your components are worse...

Kali, I was originally thinking there was no point to this thread, but perhaps it will show people that it is possible to be ripped off this severely, and to check around for prices first :)

Would it be safe to say that if you spent 2000 euro buying stuff from the cheaper vendors you would have a fairly decent and up to date machine, and if you spent much more than that you bought either a server or you were done.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Gerry

Yeah, but you will only be happy if you spend that 2 grand on stuff that is worth spending it on. Identify your priorities. A lot of people forget about a good monitor. Also a faster 80gb drive may be a better buy than a slow 120gb drive, if you know that the 120 gigs would only fill up through laziness. ( For example ). Think carefully about how much you will be using the extra features provided by each peripheral, and the performance of each core component. Like do you really need the fastest chip, when it is much worse value than the 2nd fastest, etc, etc.

    160GB HDD
    1.5GB RAM
    1800XP Processor
    64MB Video
    Live! Sound
    DVD Rom
    DVD Burner
    Firewire
    TV/Radio Card
    XP Pro

Isn't exactly the most detailed spec and even stretching my imagination I find it hard to see how you stretched to €4000 for that.

64 Mb video means the Max the card could be is a Ti4200.

Live! sound???? (SB Live 5.1? ... maybe for €4000 you got in an orchestra to play ;) )

1.5 Gig of RAM. At current DDR prices thats a bit much. I've 768 Mb of PC2100 and it's very rarely all used. PC3500 I hope?

And the ditails as to what the Case, PSU, Monitor(s) are?

I think he mean over the years hes spent 4k and hes finally happy with his current PC which is what he listed.

BLoody hell, you were robbed. I cant understand why you would spend such a huge amount of money on the daddy of all machines. Do you do a lot of high end graphics work, or video editing??

The bloody edit suites we use in college only cost about 5000 euro, they have two 21 inch screens. Not to mention the cost of the edit software and the OS.

    One word robbed.

OK, maybe I need to clarify...

Over the years I've built my way up spending probably up to €4,000 on components. There's also a 23" widescreen TVT in there.

as i said before , some of these parts are second hand , and if you look around you , you do find cheap parts..one of the Hard drives for example actually comes from somebody of boards, also the zipper and so on...easily under 1000 euros

While you're at it, how can you include a widescreen TV as being part of your PC setup. Its not on the original list either.
What else is included in the 4000Euros?
Could it be that parts that are no longer in the PC are included. e.g. If it started out life as a 200Mhz Pentium 1 and was upgraded to what you have now then all the bits that were added down the years... This could explain the additional cost.
