    I currently have Win98 OSR2 on my desktop, and I want to upgrade my OS to something a bit more up to date.
    I was thinking along the lines of either Win2K or WinXP, but, I have a copy of Win2K server.
    Could I use this on my desktop, or would it be totally unsuitable?

    win2k and xp are pure solid operating systems..

    u will easily get 1 month uptime with either..
    i prefer 2000..
    less bulk, can be tweaked to the bone..
    xp full of wizards ,not my style

    Yes, Server is pretty much the same as Pro, except for a few performance/licensing tweaks. Just make sure to optimize for foreground applications rather than performance, in My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Options:

    I tried it for a while and it drove me mad. PC took a full 10 minutes to fully boot and settle. Problem (I think) was all the services that it was running for it's "server" job but that I would never need. Even after disabling a sh1tload of them it still took an age to boot. It's obviously meant for turning on and staying on.

    Samson
    Win 2k server will work perfectly on a desktop (with a min of 256mb ram)
    But it is a little restrictive on what programs will run on it.

    Where you at?? ;->
