Right i want to do the following:

rip tracks from albums i have automatically, so i dont have to sit there and do each track 1 by 1.

Is there also a way where it can auto detect the album and download the album information from a website (something like winamp does when you put a music cd into your drive) and add this to the filename and id3 tag?

(not warez, backup for personal use :) )

can they pull the album and song information and include that in the id3 tag (or whatever their called)

and rename the songs etc to: Artist - Song title.mp3 or does that have to be done manually

CDex gets the tracklisting from the CDDB. You can change the tracklist format too (like 'Bandname - Songname.mp3' or 'Bandname - Album - Songname.mp3' etc) and it shows up in the ID3 tags.

Oh and it's unbloated freeware too :]

ive used AudioCatalyst for years, works great, like many others probably uses the CDDB thing to find the names of the artist and tracks :)

I use Musicmatch Jukebox, it also has the cddb lookup.
There's a plugin for the newest version of winamp that lets you rip mp3s too.

tbh the only reason I use it is because it also has a burner which means I can just burn off play lists. I'm too lazy to try anthing else. :)

Musicmatch jukebox. I fond this works very good.

Also Easy Cd Creator can be used for ripping CD's

One problem though. some of the new CD's are protected. they can't be ripped(yet)

I was under the impression that lame is used to convert .wav into mp3 and that it doesnt actually rip cds.
For converting .wav into mp3 I use db power amp or Blade Enc.
