Tricky one this as genres often merge...I'll go for Close Encounters
as I was mesmersied by the lights and the billowing clouds as the UFOs passed through the night sky.

    In no particular order....

    Ghost in the Shell
For all its flaws (and there are plenty, especially when compared to the original Ghost in the Shell manga which was full of humour and clever technical explanations), still the best cyberpunk movie ever made.

    Event Horizon
Seems to divide opinion down the middle, either you love it or hate it... Personally, I love it. Probably the best sci-fi horror ever made for my money - yes, actually scarier than Alien. Although...

    Aliens
I don't think I need to explain why this is in here.

    The Empire Strikes Back
Ditto. The best of the Star Wars flicks by a country mile.

    Macross Plus
It's Top Gun in space, but with characters you actually care about, stunning animation, great music and a clever plot. Actually, the four-part miniseries version is better, but the movie moves along at a cracking pace and is very entertaining regardless.

    The Matrix
Cyberpunk meets kung-fu meets anime-style action. It's easy to slag off the Matrix since it's now so popular, but remember how it made your jaw drop when you first saw it in the cinema?

    Brazil
The best vision of a dystopian future ever - a genius and utterly underrated movie.

    Stargate
Probably the most atmospheric SF movie ever made - like Indiana Jones meets Aliens.

    Twelve Monkeys
    Brazil
Alien Trilogy (3 was extremely under-rated I thought!)
Being John Malkovich (I suppose you could call it Sci-Fi)
    Blade Runner
    Event Horizon
    The Terminator + T2
    A Clockwork Orange
    Star Wars (Original Trilogy only)
Star Trek (2,4,6, and 8 only)
    Dark City (Very under-rated)

I suppose that about does it.
