Will IrelandOffline be doing a year in Review of whats happened and changed in the past 12 months ?

Might be a handy reference for the Telco Tribunal in a few years time.

Everyone throw in Events and Dates from 2002 and we can make a proper timeline then for the past 12 Months.

    Best:

    Comms Bill
    The Regulator gets some teeth.

Minister Ahern's draft direction and ComReg's FRIACO statement
    Bodes well...

    Fibre Rings Project
A far-sighted plan with great potential.

    UTVip & Netsmart
The success of these pre-paid off-peak packages show that there is an unmet demand for innovative internet access products in Ireland.

    ADSL released (finally)
Agreement between the ODTR and Eircom in April allows ADSL services to be introduced to the market (see below)

    WiFi takes off
Growth of WiFi, in the absence of a cable network of any significance, represents the best hope for an alternative last mile solution for consumers

    ODTR becomes ComReg
Nobody mourned the passing of the ODTR, whose contribution to internet access was to assign two prefixes for full and partial flat rate internet access services to be negotiated by the telcos...

IIA Award for Social Inclusion to IrelandOffline
It's always good to get some recognition

    Worst:
Still no flat rate internet access or affordable broadband access
    'nuff said.

    removal of dial-up discount schemes
As if it wasn't expensive enough...

    ADSL pricing
Between two and three times as expensive as other, often better ADSL services abroad.

    Internet Use in Ireland
Still trawling the depths in every survey. Given the above, is it any wonder?
