Has anyone tried that Dreamcast Internet CD?
I heard a radio advert that said the Irish version is out now...
Anyone know the deal for access, do you need to pay for access, is it any good etc?

the disc is free (i got one and i dont even have a dc), you just go into a shop and take one. u just pay for phone calls, but not to use the service itself. that might change though when the game network is launched. but there arent really any online games out so dont worry about it.
get a keyboard though, the onscreen one is waay too big smile.gif

I was at home and PC-less for the weekend, the DC internet access worked well for me though, screen fonts are a little large but overall it's easy to use, and is actually better than a lot of WebTV setups I've seen.

Browsing on a TV in your living room is somehow more communal and social than being in front of a PC, too. Might be a good plan to introduce kids to the 'net with a Dreamcast rather than a PC.

Not had a chance to hook mine up yet - got the CD, just no phone line in the flat. It seems to be good enough.

Whilst on the subject, what games are people playing for it? I've got House of the Dead 2 (+ 2 guns smile.gif ) and Ready 2 rumble (fantastic!). Soul Calibur is next on the list, followed by Crazi Taxi methinks.

Yip, I've got HouseOfTheDead2, CrazyTaxi, Sonic and SoulCalibur... All great games.
But I think the DC is turning out a bit like the N64, great console; fook all games.
Every time I go into Virin, they have the same 10 games...
Any word on when "ResidentEvil:Code Veronica" will be out?

Dreamcast, in fairness, seems to be going for quality over quantity, but not in the silly way Nintendo do.

Code Veronica is great, and is out in the next few months... Best Biohazard game yet. Also look out for Dead or Alive 2 in the next couple of months, and Metropolis Street racer....

    Dead or Alive 2....mmmmmmmmmm
Nice Girlys in scanty outfits cool.gif

On the subject - check out Ready 2 Rumble's female competitors - very *ahem* free moving *ahem* models - I don't ever want to hear ppl go on about Lara Croft again - got nothing on Lulu Valentine from Ready 2 Rumble tongue.gif

Well to get back on track, I tried the dream-key CD thingy...
And yip, that on-screen keyboard is way too big, and even worse it's sorted alphabeticaly as opposed to "qwerty". Gah!
Normal webpages appear HUGE and are too big to fit on the screen.
Which means you have huge ugly scrolbars on the bottom and righthand side.
Which are almost impossible to 'scroll' with the joypad.
Their is also a security-lockout from 'sites deemed unsuitable', such as yahoo mail and various porno sites.
    Bah!

Then if that's the case, that is PANTS!

    Security lockout?

I didn't get that. Checked Yahoo Mail etc. no bother.

Yeah, I dunno what the deal with it was...
But it tells on the lockout screen how to disable it, but when you get to the screen with the alleged check-box, it's not there.
    What a pile of toss.
Might be useful if you were off for the weekend, and wanted to check out the web.

    Lockout of certain sites...
This may be happening because the date of birth you entered says that your under 18?

Kool, I'm moving into a house with a phone line, so I'll be making use of it. Everyone seems to be saying the on-screen keyboard is pants. How much is the keyboard? £30 or something?

How come none of you have Power Stone? Ok I might have missed it mentioned somewhere downalong the thread but that game is almost as good as Soul Calibur , if not a little more original. The other games I have are R2R , House OTD 2 and Soul Calibur. All great games. Has anyone played Zombie Revenge? I heard one can make a custom character and upload it onto the internet. It would be one of the first nifty things that the DC modem could be used for.Plus there are all manner of excellent weapons in it so does anyone have any info on it?

The sequel is on it's way too, it's gonna support 4 player simultaneous play. mmmmmmmm biggrin.gif

Powerstone's good, but I tihnk Soul Calibur is much better. smile.gif
You should try playing Soul Calibur with the dreamcast fishing rod, its amusing biggrin.gif

I haven't played Zombie Revenge, but I played Shenmue on a Japanese Dreamcast and it looks loooooovely. I couldn't understand a word of it, unfortunately, as it was spoken in Japanese with Chinese subtitles, but it certainly looked good. smile.gif

Kharn, the keyboards are £20 in my shop (UK)

Dead{o}Santa: I found this in one of the dreamcast magazines...
    =====
By default, Dreamcast comes with a filter designed to remove online
content that might be unsuitable for users under the age of 18 years.
Chances are that you'll want to remove this restriction, and here's
    how you do it.
    1. First, make a note of your Dreamarena username and password.
    2. After connecting, pull the left trigger and select Options from the menu.
    3. Choose the Modem section, followed by AT Setup.
    4. Now go to Delete Memory and click Yes to confirm.
    5. Reset your Dreamcast, and select Restore Me from the main menu.
    6. Select your country, agree to Sega's terms, then select Restore.
    7. When you re-enter your username and password, look for the
checkbox that enables and disables the filter.
    =====
I havn't tried this out - havn't come across any blocked sites
myself yet, but i don't use it too often. Hope this helps.

That's really bad that you have to pay more over there.

I'm an idiot who can't make a rational argument, but maybe if my mummy lets me on the computer again and I come back and make some points sensibly and without insulting people, Shinji won't edit my next post.

You are truly an 3l33t games player , hahahahahahahah

Now is it because you're an dope who stole his nick from a character from Neon genesis evangelion or the fact that you cant answer a question , or a point of fact that the DC is nothing more than a glorified atari jaguar with more than likely a small life span , i'm guessing no doubt having read this board from time to time and seen you're obviously idiotic ideas on "gaming" that you do own one , perhaps its self protection , if so , edit this one away too and continue on playing your toss machine

Just have a quick question for you, what is the connection speed like on the DC on the net?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭bugs

From what i've read , most DC's have a 33.6k modem in ireland anyway ( Japan are going nuts about having to use dial-up )
Basically that gives you a fairly high ping and you can't possibly hope to play most of the games on the market that are currently available to play online.
As much as i think quake is not playable ( more , not fun ) on highish ping , playing fighting games is just silly . You can'y hope to play them properly over i'd guess about 50 ping , after that , the time delay gets too large and reacting to anything is lagged and the game becomes crap , try it on VGS net play you'll see what i mean.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

    Speaking of online play...
... Quake 3 Arena is comming to DC and will be compatible with current "PC" based servers etc. That will ov course mean that DC ppl will be able to play on Vishnu, Barrys and the likes.
    sweeeeeeeeeeeeet smile.gif

    LOL
I whine enough about playing on a 130 ping in college, i just cant imagine quake 3 on a console , on a TV thru a 36.6k modem half way across the world will be fun.
I don't know whether DC has higher capabilities than 33.6/56k but that'll be the majority, somehow , i cant see it taking off smile.gif
