Historical ISEQ returns

Hi Folks. I came across this and decided to post this considering we're at years end. This list shows the % return on the ISEQ for each year since 1974 up to 1998. If anyone knows what the value was for '99, '00 and '01 I'd appreciate it. But looking at the values here notice that 1974 and 1990 were the most destructive years. But the returns from all other years more than make up for this.

So if the ISEQ went down by -30% this year, perhaps we're ready to move onward again? Barring an Iraqi war, terrorist attacks, Deflation threat (no fear of that here!), social & economic and more boardroom reforms.... we should be positive... after all a 4 year fall in equities would be yet a new record.

My flippant guess for the year is that we will oscillate 10-20% for most of the year and maybe end up marginally postive for the year similar to 1991. Equities really need an earning reason to grow... not just because they are "cheap". But sooner or late...

ISEQ Returns for 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 so far:

1999 -1.17%

2000 15.83%

2001 -0.65%

2002 -29.07%

The ISEQ limped home to the end of year return of -30% at 4005. This is on par with the return in 1991. I heard the DAX did worse though... in the mid 40%... ouch!
