The thing is, I'm not that far away from 3 Rock and can see the mountain no problem, but the website seems to suggest that the signal cannot be received south of Foxrock (bout a mile up the road from me)..

Service will be available south of foxrock as far as loughlantown hospital hopefull after the weekend. We are installing a new radio dedicated to this area.

All arguments aside, I for one am happy..

Wohoo! 1mb broadband is actually going to be available to me!
Has the service actually been upped to 1mb yet Karl?

Ask karl there to post up traceroutes to JOLT and IGN servers.

The ping was 50-100 on irish gaming servers compared to 40-60 on ISDN.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,308 ✭✭✭quozl

if you're concerned about pings, you could have a look at irishbroadband. They're on 3rock as well, and the 1/2 meg service is about the same price. The install is a good bit dearer though, but it is uncapped.

Pings are much better though, 30-40 for irish, and 35-50 for uk servers in game. That and the lack of cap is why I went with them.

Please don't take this as an ad., IBB are a shower of muppets who have given me more hassle than anyone except eircom. But, if you're a gamer, you should take a look at them.

Everything has calmed down now so I'll be answering questions again if the mods have no objection.

Ping times with Irish Wisp to game servers:

    jolt.co.uk 81 milliseconds
    ign.ie 64 milliseconds

Up until yesterday I had had little feedback, good or bad, regarding games. We installed a customer yesterday and tested Wolfenstien on his PC. The customer seemed happy but I'd like to hear further feedback from existing customers to give an impartial opinion.

Just a quick question on your map thingy there on the site.

Im in Dun Laoghaire and on the map theres a white line and beyond that is another white line. Is the outer white line an area where you could get lucky? if it is i might have to arrange a LOS test tho ill undoubtedly fail due to the fact im on other side of a hill but id like to try if theres any chance at all. Been waiting for IBB for ever and tbh, im sick of waiting.

Im a gamer and i realise atm yor ping times aint great compared to ISDN. But sure i can keep isdn until/if you fix it :)

So my main question is, ne point in trying for a LOS?

    EDIT:
-Whats the upload plz? Dont seem to be able to see it on the site. Is it symmetrical?
-Once you reach the cap are you disconnected for remainder of month? you pay per mb? or is the service throttled?

    Hi Karl

Is there any chance of you turning off the VPN for a particular client? I couldn't really be arsed who sees my traffic (I gave up on porn years ago :) ) but it will affect my gaming speed (probably) and setting it up under linux might be a pain the the @rse (I want to connect it to my linux gateway/firewall directly without the ethernet convertor)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭martinikarl

    BKDZR,

Yes, Dun Laoghaire is in a grey area for LOS. We can do a LOS test for you if you wish but if you can't see 3-rock there is no point. If it's unsuccessful there is no charge. If it is successful, we do the install right there and then.....no point in making 2 trips.

    Upload is 256kb/s
    download is 512kb/s

Regarding the 12 gig cap.....we don't throttle or cutoff. We simply inform customers that they have gone over and ask them to ease up. If a customer were to blatantly ignore the warnings we would have to take measures although thus far we have not had to do this.

    glimmerman,

We can't turn off the VPN. It's used as a method of authentication as well as encryption. Games seem to work ok with the VPN though. You may have read a post about VPN slowing things down. We used to think this was true but we've since learned that this is not the case.

having a cap and not enforcing it is a good way to do it. (Better then the Nolimits solution. :) )

Forgive me for contradicting you but any encrytion or compression would affect gaming. Perhaps not very much (infact, I'd expect it to be reasonably neligable) but surely it *must* affect it technically. Encryption isnt a light overhead (any idea what key-size it is?) so it would have to add to the real packet time neh?
    (I'm curious about this myself...).

The routing table on the routers and the connectivity to the Inex are far more important though.

Karl, I am glad you returned. I stick by what I said, if perhaps not how I said it (or at least how it came accross).
I think you should consider it and thats my final words on the matter.

    DeV.

PS: the best way to test a gaming service is to get someone who has it already, get them to play the game and tell you what the ingame ping is. Everything else is really speculation because dos pings arent not a good indicator of Quake/CS pings.

I'm sure someone here has WISP and Q3 and can give the readers a range of pings...

    Thx for reply Karl.

I'll have to get ladder and map out to see which way 3 rock is and wether im on wrong side of hill.

If theres ne chance ill give ya a call for the LOS test.

    Good to see you back,

    Re Cap:
Earlier in the thread you said the cap applied in both directions ie: 12gb up/12gb down
.. can you confirm this please?

Also, when are you planning on increasing the speed to 1mb/s as announced on the site?

    Thanks,
    David.

    Hi Karl,

Have you plan to do something for the No/Low coverage area (c.f. your map)?
    I'm right in the middle!!

    Thanks

    Hi Karl,
Is ther anything in the pipeline to offer coverage around the Lucan area? I would have thought that being fairly flat around here, a transmitter around somewhere like Westmanstown would give a good area of cover.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭martinikarl

Regarding Lucan, Blanchardstown, Northside etc....I won't be making promises about plans to expand to any areas until we're absolutely sure. We don't have a reputation for vapour-ware and I like it that way. I don't want to get anyones hope's up. When we are definately going ahead with a new transmitter, we'll let you know.

    VPN, ping times:

VPN is 128 bit. I'm not sure what kind of effect VPN has on games but it must be low. A customer of mine tells me he's getting 100ms ingame for most UK servers.

    Enforcement:

We don't have a policy of not enforcing the cap. It's just that we are not heavy-handed about it. If a customer were to abuse it blatantly, we would take measures.

    No/low coverage area:

The only way to get around that issue is to get another transmitter facing the hill that runs from the dual carriageway to the coast. I refer you to my earlier comment about not making promises.

    Cap:

The cap is a combination of up and down. 6 gig up plus 6 gig down means you are at the limit. Most people would upload at 10% of what they download so it would usually be 10.8 gig down/1.2 gig up.

    Increase to 1mb:

We plan to raise it to 1mb when Eircom drop their prices to EUR 54 and is actually able to deliver it to customers in a rasonable time-frame.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭glimmerman

    Karl, thanks for that.

Assuming I pass the LOS on saturday, I will attempt to post some in game ping times.

128 bit VPN? You're not talking about WEP are you? Do you use 802.11b?

I hope you take into account the possibility of your customers being hit by Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. This could easily cause your customers to go over the limit, but it should be easy to spot when it happens and really a customer shouldn't be punished for what is not their fault.

Oh, I do love competition, I just need to move to the southside so .... sigh!

We're not using WEP because it's rubbish. It's 128 bit encryption using mpd encryption on Free BSD. It uses the standard microsoft vpn client.

    Yes it's 802.11b

What name is your company registered under?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭martinikarl

    DOS attacks:

We would be more concerned about the DOS attack if that were the case. We don't have a policy for that as it's one of thousands of scenarios that could theoretically happen.

    Company Name:

The registered company name is Irish WISP Consultants LTD

We have a new coverage map.

The new map's still quite ambiguous, I'm afraid - especially for people right on the border of the coverage area - for example, I'm in Stradbrook Hall off Stradbrook Road, with clear LOS (as far as I can tell) to Three Rock. Am I in or out? A couple of location dots for each town/village/conurbation would be a great help, actually.

Another question - are there any conflicts with Macs and IrishWisp's service?
