The last decent games magazine was Arcade, and even that went rather askew before its demise... *sigh* 'Tis a sorry state of affairs.

Plenty of good review sites/features sites out there - these days "good games mag" seems to be something of an oxymoron.

I'm not getting paid by shinji but Eurogamer.net is quite good. Rpgamer.com is great for rpg news. IGN.com can be a bit dodgy sometimes.

If I get a magazine it would be EGM (electronic gaming monthly). It's american so it is expensive but cheaper than cd cover mags. It only covers consoles though but then again there is nothing at the moment on PCs. It's also about 75% adverts but other than that the reviewers news and reviews are all of a high quality.

The last good games magazine was Zzap! 64

I'll probably get blasted for saying this (but it's an honest response to your question).

I like Edge magazine and recently bought a decent magazine called Games™ although that seems to have stalled on issue 1.

Me too. I also like the Edge. It makes me look sophisticated and cool to the checkout girls in Easons. Well, more like it deflects attention away from the large bundle of porno that I'm also buying.

hmmmm, this is one of the "revealing too much" moments, isn't it?

You know, I was in Sofmap (kinda like the Tokyo equivalent of PC World, only not as rubbish and they do loads of DVDs as well as PC stuff) yesterday in Ginza - it's in this huge department store family shopping type thing. There was an entire huge section between PC games and computer reference books dedicated to pornographic games, porn DVDs, porn artbooks and porn game magazines, with both gay and straight catered for. It was directly opposide the Disney DVD stand, too, and not a single one of the mothers out shopping with their kids or families seemed to give a damn.

I knew the Japanese were WAAAAAAAAY more liberal about this stuff, but that one still made my jaw hit the floor(*).

    Amp, you'd LOVE it here.

(* Just before I made some purchases *cough*)

Is it true that you can buy used girls underwear in vending machines in japan? That's fairly liberal.

We'll..if it stops the freakazoids from going out and actually stealing used underwear, then It's a valid solution to a serious problem.

I used to get PC Zone..decent price ( or at least it used be), good content, humour was a little dry..but that didn't stop me from getting it. (What did was a t3 internet connection and a lab full of cd burners :P)

    Demo discs? who needs 'em!

Does anyone (Shinji) know what the hell happened with Games™ ? I can appreciate that there are an awful lot of (issue 1) magazines still sat on the shelves..... Even so, I'd have expected them to secure sufficient funding for more than an initial issue.

I like Edge alot. Reviews are very harsh so not to everybodys taste but the art/design and a news coverage is excellent. I really like the articles/columns too. You get people like Nagoshi director of Amusement Vision (Datona, Monkey Ball, FZero) discussing games every month. It's a pretty adult magazine and an aquired taste.

PCZone is really good too. Harsh reviews, good humour, excellent mod coverage. Comes with lots of redundant CD's of course. I just bin them.

Other than that the only one that was decent was Arcade. GamesTM seems pretty good. It's trying to ape Edge a bit much but maybe it'll find its own identity in the next few issues.

If its gamecube mags ur after (which ur probably not) i recommend NGC magazine. its a decendant of super play and i really trust their reviews. some good funny features too, a hell of a lot better than those "official" magazines where 85% is a bad score
