My modem reports v.92 on utv, and has done for about 2 months but I haven't noticed any particular improvement in dial-up speed or upload speed.

mines gotten worse, i dial into utv servers @ 46.6

    it used to be 50.6

    eircoms is 50.6,

i emailed and got the usual reply, "just because it connects lower doesn't mean its slower",

erm, yeah right, any modem i've ever had acts that way ..

    am i alone?

from the last thing i was told v92 is not supported and have no plans to support it .

thats all i rember about it .. could b wrong tho

i'm getting either 46.6, 48, 50.6 or 52Kbps connecting to IOL NetSmart which I think supports V.92 but it never always connects at the same speed - a week ago I even got connected at 32Kbps which was wierd but disconnecting and reconnecting again got me back up to 50.6

All UTV Internet services support V.92, dial-up and UTVip.

Is there difference between v90 and v92 noticeable?
I was thinking about buying a new modem but wasn't sure if it's worth it.

I'm pretty sure an analog modem connect speed of over 50Kbps/s is very unstable..

I doubt i'll be able to get it for IOL NoLimits :f yet, i think im ok, i got a ping of 95 last night!!!! :O and on radox too ;) stableing around 109

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,471 ✭✭✭elexes

a56k'r at 109 ping to radox ? as if lowest ive seen has been 157 and that shot up to 190 after

thought v92 only added one r two handy fetures to modems not actually improving the connection speeds

v92 has nothing to do with your inbound speeds, it increses te outbound from 28.8k to 33.6k under certain circumstances

IOLFree and Oceanfree both support V.92
The new features of V.92 are improved upload speed, and faster initial connection to the internet(now takes about have the time before getting the verifying password dialogue).
There's also a feature which I haven't been able to get work, whereby if you have only one phone line in the house, you can set the modem to hang up or go on hold if you get an incoming call.

Well, its a bit better than that:

    From v92 Specs:
Upstream data rates are increased from 33.6 Kilobits per second (Kbps) to 48Kbps

ISTR that the 2 benefits were

    1. Shorter negotiation (quicker connects after the remote modem answers)

    2. Increased upstream speeds ....didnt think it was as high as 48k

UTV is still the only ISP that supports it , non?

Eircon WILL (or are, depends on where you are) support v.92.

This is according to their Employee Newspaper (Eircom Live!)

    that is all,

boober_ie, how did u get that good of a ping on 56k m8??

Really would be grt if u could give a run-down of what net settings ur using, for the modem port stuff and the HL stuff.

Tis tough playing clan matches when your jumping around over 200 :/

    IOL and oceanfree support it.
The quoted figure for v.92 is 44k i think.

If anyone manages to get the hangup on incoming call feature working let me know!!

    Tribble

When I rang an Eircom Rep to find out if they will support v92, I was told
We will not be upgrading to v92. It's now worth the effort and money to upgrade to it nationwide. How about eircom hi-speed ? blah blah blah blah

    Gone Shootin

I don't have the issue anymore Gone Shootin but I am 100% certain about it.

Eircom Live is eircoms internal Employee newspaper and there was a whole article dedicated to v.92 and eircomnets future support of such.

Does anyone know if Eircom supports v.92 yet and has anyone got modem on hold working?

I've tried searching the forums and the eircom.net site but can't find any clear answer to this.

    thanks
