Guns n Roses - Bad apples
Slash's Snakepit - Back and Forth again (nice build up)
Ram Jam - Black Betty (The country sounding one)
    Radiohead - Paranoid android
    Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing

Yeah I know Zappa is a great guitarist. I heard one of his cd's (my friend has it). He sounds like John Petrucci on crack when he plays his solos. Now thats saying something! But you have to remember that this is a Rock/Metal forum. Zappa is Jazz isn't he?

    my choices:
Metallica: Orion 2nd - Best piece of music ever IMO

Metallica: ..And Justice For All (not sure which number...)
In Flames: The Jester Race - not very fast, but so full of feeling.

Since there has been little/no mention of Power Metal Id say:
Sinergy - Suicide By my Side
It has a cracker of a solo in it.

Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond
Absolutely (although, Zorba didn't have the solo did it? Still class piece done by proper bouzouki players)
    to add to them:
    A load by Jimi Hendrix
Hotel California (As Ricardo Smith said)

well i would have to say a couple.

Children of the damned - Iron Maiden
    Wanderlust(intro) - nightwish (absolutely amazing)
Most of the nightwish stuff is brilliance.
Freebird if you can find a guitarist able to play it then it rocks.
i like a hell of a lot more but i wont mention that at the moment.

Freebird if you can find a guitarist able to play it then it rocks.

I was watching a band playing in one of my locals and they played Freebird.
They had to get a fella they knew from the audience to come up and play that song only.

The solo he played was absolutely amazing, i'd say it was well over 10 minutes, sounded alot like the original, had a few additions and in my opinion sounded better than the original. This guy was playing it so fast and was even playing the solo behind his back.

The band is Men in Black, i think they're from Killkenny and i'd certainly see them again. :D

It's always changing, but at the moment it's Megadeth- Tornado of Souls and Dream Theater- Take the Time (outro solo)

John Petrucci's version of Flight of the bumble bee is pretty amazing as well

It's probably not my favourite (i'm not sure what is), but since I happened to be listening to it while reading this post, I think Metallica - The Unforgiven is well deserving of an honourable mention. It's one of the few solo's on the black album he did on the spot, and the way it start's great, mellows into a lull of sorts, before rising back to a kick ass climax gets me everytime.

I must add one more to my list.

Morbid Angel - Sworn To The Black. Its a great tapping solo. It just sounds great. No other way to explain it.

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar (One of the most recognised guitar rifts ever)

also, when asked favourite, why do ppl post four or five?

  • Site Banned Posts: 334 ✭✭scuzzy

    Parisienne Walkways - Thin Lizzy

Gary Moore at his best. Perfect note placement, and just listen to that tone...

Cos that is a simply impossible question to answer. Everyone always have 4 or 5 of their favourite which they cant chose from.

P.S. Apart from one or two of you out there...
PEOPLE SHOULD BE LISTENING TO DREAM THEATER.
You don't honestly know what you are missing.

I know the last one may be indie I just don't care!!!! Why is everybody going for metal solos here? Some of the best solos ever are by non metal bands!!
