    This was probably asked before:

Who played in goals for Man U one season and then went on to score for Newcastle the next?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Which former Man U player only scored one goal in his entire Old Trafford career but then went on to score 10 in one season in the Portugese first division?

Which is the only English club to be known by it's nickname (rather than full or abreviated names) on the official table?

    Answer 2. Wolves ?

    1. Correct - took their (Benfica's? Porto's?) penalties.

    2. Correct - can't fit Wolverhampton Wanderers on the table.

Still haven't aclue about Dustaz's question.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 570 ✭✭✭manonthemoon

On goal for Man U, scores for Newcastle.

    The Honey Monster? (I think)

    Here is real tester.

On one day a club in England took to the fiels with 9 England captains in the first X1.

Name the club & the 9 captains?

OK Clue it was in the 1980's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

    Another Clue then -

    The team was Southampton

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

    Shilton, Keegan, Ball

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Had all the players been England captains? Or for some was it something that would happen in the future? Also is this just captains of the first team or are U-21 etc. included?

:o Whoops. Ermmmm...yes....just testing! (cough)

I haven't really got a clue about the England Captain's question, but....

Last season in the Premiership there were three clubs that the Managers first name was the same as a player at the same clubs last name......

For example. at Lacklustre United, the manager is Dave Burns and the right back is Robert Dave
This is not an answer, only a helping hand ;)

Actually, there is four answers, but the fourth one is really suspect!

    Stephen Gerrard (Gerrard Houllier)
    Alain Robert (Bobby Robson)

    Can't remember the third?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

    Stephen Gerard - Gerard houllier
    Laurent Robert - bobby Robson

The third will come to me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

    Steven Gerrard - Gerard Houllier
Laurent Robert - Robert "Bobby" Robson
    George Burley - Finidi George

is there another? my brain is broke

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 651 ✭✭✭Okie

    The ones I heard were....

Liverpool - Gerard Houllier - Stephen Gerard
Ipswich - George Burley - Finini George
Southampton - Gordon Strachan - Dean Gordon

and the one that everyone else seemed to get but it took me ages was...

Newcastle - Bobby "Robert" Robson - Lauren Robert

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

I may be wrong but Dean Gordon was with Middlesborough last season, deffo wasn't Southampton.

Yeah, I had a feeling that one wasn't quite right but I was told he was on loan to Southampton at the time the question was formed.

So it's either correct on technicalities or completely wrong. Either way sorry for the confusion.

YES. England senior team captains. No catches.

    Shilton, Keegan, Ball are correct

    3/9

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Mark Wright, Peter Reid, Gary Lineker, Paul Bracewell, Trevor Steven...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

None of them played for Southampton as far as I know. MOTM says they all polayed for the one team. Is Barry Venison another one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Alan Shearer? When he was young?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Now I'm getting really conflustered, was it not in the Southampton V Everton game in the mid-80's ?
Mark Wright played for Southampton, the others with Everton. No way could there be nine England captains playing for Southampton at the same time !?!?

Nine England Captains Senior Full international played for Southamton in a league game in the 1980's. Not Everton.

It was Southampton. Everton was not the team, for it was them saints who played at the Dell. They were known as Southampton.

Everton was not their name. Neither Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Plymouth, Cardiff or Coventry. Thy calleth Southampton

Why? Because it was Southampton that had 9 England Captains on thy pitch on the South Coast. Three of these Captains were Alan Ball, Peter Shilton & Kevin Keegan.

    .........................................................

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Okay I give up who the **** were they? PM if necessary.

It better not have been an exhibition match or some ****e.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Thanks Manonthemoon, that clears it up a little :)

Was Mark Wright not one of them, he played for them in the mid-eighties?

Was it Mark Lawrenson that made up this question, i think he pulled it out of his arse...

    c'mon we're stumped, whats de answers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭hussey

    stuart pearse?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

No Shearer start coming through in very late eighties. By then Alan Ball was working on getting his third club relegated. There is no way they could have played on the same team. Matt Le Tiss could possibly have though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,240 ✭✭✭hussey

    Le Tiss never capped england
I dont think he ever got 90mins in one match for teh full team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,839 ✭✭✭Hobart

Has to be a trick question.

P.S. I know it was said earlier in the Thread not to google, but this was driven me nuts!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

yeh, honey monster was correct btw :)

MOTM I am not trying to be thick about this but I am still a bit suspect about this question. When I heard it before, it was that there were nine England captains on the field in a match between Southampton and Everton, split between both teams. How sure are you that all these players played for Southampton? If Dave Watson is part of the answer then Everton are included!

On another note there was a question on the Ian Dempsey show this morning. Who played in a Liverpool, Milan, Madrid and Borrusia Dortmund v Borussia Mon.....bach, you know the team I am not going to try and spell it. They did not know the answer, and I do not think that anyone did it. Can anyone think of a player that did?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 570 ✭✭✭manonthemoon

Sorry Folks. There were in fact only 6 captains on the field that day. The answer is

Mick Mills, Peter Shilton, Terry Butcher, Dave Watson (not the Evertin one), Kevin Keegan, Alan Ball
