I am certainly not fond of the "Wu-tards", as a friend of mine calls them. They are simply regular pop/dance freaks who have opened up a "Rock" (and i use that word in it's loosest possible sense) branch. The only thing i have to console myself is that, like all trendy fads, this will last roughly 6 months, then we will be free of hoodies, wu-tang jeans, Slipknot and their irritating "music", Linkin Park and their ridiculous rapping FOREVER!! Also, Nirvana might take a proper place in music history, rather than being worshipped by people who probably weren't aware they existed until they became popular again about a year ago.

Slipknot will go the same way as Hearsay, worshipped at the beginning, shot down in flames at the end.

at least there is only one album left from them

Yo Angelwhore, read the messages more closely, and you will see that so far only one person (eth0_) has so far refered to these kids as goths, the rest have either preceded it with the word "wannabe" or put the word goth in inverted commas. This would suggest that they DO in fact, know what a goth really is.

    Really?

I do beg your pardon, i meant to say Pugsley, but got confused with eth0_. Upon closer inspection, Pugsley was the person who didn't use inverted commas or the word wannabe. Forgive my mistake.

Still though, even 'Wannabe' and "Goth" give allusions to the term being used as 'Another word for the same thing' when it comes to dealing with these kids. Which it certainly isn't.

I'm pretty sure NONE of the actualy DO want to be Goth, especially if they actualy knew what goth music was. Because it's almost completely unrelated to most forms of metal.

Just curious, do you know much about Goth at all?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 198 ✭✭Axe

Why yes, as it happens, i am quite friendly with a real goth, and therefore would consider myself to know enough about the subject to get me by. Suffice to say i know enough to not refer to the Slipknot kids as goths, cos they just plain aren't! I myself, have never used the word goth in reference to the kids, coz i know better.

What's everyones problem with people who wear slipknot/korn/linkin park hoodies? It's not like they're going around robbing cars, beating people up, breaking into houses.. like a lot of the youth today. Compared to them they are angels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 198 ✭✭Axe

Oh, come on! We are debating them from a musical point of view, not whether or not they are criminals!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 583 ✭✭✭^CwAzY^

    Come on they're 12 & 13.
I'm sure they're flattered that they annoy you so much.

They can go as old as 18, really.

But on the flipside I've seen some serious 14 year old Death Metal fans.

In which case, listen to these:
    Joy Division - Shadow Play

    Any questions? [/B]

Yeah, I have one. Do you actually have any concept of what 'goth' is yourself?

Because mentioning Joy Division in connection to goth certainly suggests that you don't.

    Now now.

Define 'Goth' arguments, suck ass. Who gives a **** like?

    Highly constructive comment #106

Well done, you've earned a cookie.
Not a very bright cookie, mind you.
    But it suits you.

Goth evolved from the Post-Punk scene of the late 70's. Joy Division is clearly one of the most influential bands when it comes to the early goth scene. Simple, really. Of course, seeing as you give no arguement in your first post as to why you'd consider them NOT to be connected to goth, I think I'll ask for that in your next reply.

Oh no! A patronising sarcastic internet guy has really cut me to the bone there!

Not really very clever to start a post insulting someone and then claim the moral high ground demanding constructive arguementative points btw.

Please! Any incarnation of guitar based music can be connected back to any previous form if you want to be anal enough about it, and clearly you do. You could just as easily credit Leadbelly with influencing modern folk if that's the way you have to categorise everything.

JD might have had an influence on goth but they were not a goth band (or even 'early goth' <-). As such (and this is my point) telling people who want to find out about the scene to listen to stuff like ShadowPlay is off the mark. It's like telling someone who wanted to find out about grunge to go listen to Cheap Trick or Husker Du. Sure they may have influenced many of the bands who eventually got labeled 'grunge' ... but they aren't grunge. Similarily JD aren't goth.

Now have a cookie yourself. Stick your face in a whole packet if you like.

No, I'm certainlly not being anal about it.
Joy Division are possibly the MOST influential band when it comes to Goth. And Shadow Play is a song that perfectly emphasizes this. Ian Curtis' vocal style was possibly one of the most profound (Especially at the time) influences, definetly on the likes of Andrew Eldritch, Rozz Williams and so on.

Also, specifically, the bassline to Shadow Play, and the whole guitar style. Clearly a profound influence on what Goth was at the time of the early 80's: deep vocals, deep basslines, and the guitar usually 'Echoing' over it sparsely. A definite blueprint set down by JD.

This is NOT anally backtracking to something that Might have been an influence, this is a DIRECT, and PROFOUND influence.

    And here's something else.

    A quick search on google:
    http://www.scathe.demon.co.uk/histgoth.htm

Go to the 'Influence' and 'Bands' sections.
This backs up my points perfectly.

And also I don't like the idea of skating being given a bad rep by these muppets. I mean whatever happened to DC, Vans, Quiksilver etc. Cheapo hoodies and crap just looks wrong if you ask me!
